Dealing with UPS

We shipped an order via UPS last week (for Tom Mandrove) and apparently UPS decided to royally screw it up. When it arrived (according to Tom) the box was missing his Eagle connecting rods, 2 plugs, and in it's place were a pair of kids shoes (WTF?).

Has anyone recently dealt with UPS on a botched shipment? Any tips? I insured the package for the proper amount, so I'm sure I won't have any issues, but wanted to get some tips before tackling this (expected) nightmare.

UPS = :tdown:

I don't know. I usually go FedEx, they're usually 30% cheaper then UPS.

Re: Dealing with UPS

Yeah, I'm wishing I had tried Fedex at this point. We ship tons with UPS and this is the first botched one ever. They busted the box and apparently repacked it horribly (the pictures Tom sent me show completely different packing/box than we used). I'm working to get Tom the missing parts out asap so that he can get this truck ready on time, and this time I'll use Fedex.

Re: Dealing with UPS

good luck with ups. ive tried to get them to pay before and it is a pita big time. first they will have you take pictures, then how it was taped, what packaging was used. they will ask if it was an approved box with the appropriate box certificate on the bottom with its freight classification for weight and crush psi. they will ask if you packed or someone else, etc.... have fun.

Re: Dealing with UPS

Be sure to tell them this was boxed and or packaged properly. As, with all their claims, they'll say it's not their fault because "it was not packed properly". They will still try this with insured packages. Let 'em know that if you ship regularly with them, and have a regular pick up UPS guy, that he would not accept the shipment if it wasn't packed properly. As with any shipping company, they're out to cover their ass, not give money back to their customer. You shouldn't have a problem, though.

Re: Dealing with UPS

Hyundai shipped me a windshield once using UPS Supply Chain Solutions because my main PDC didn't have it in stock. I heard the driver pull up, so I walked out the back door, just in time to watch him THROW the box off the back of his truck. He obviously missed the FRAGILE GLASS stickers all over the box. I placed a claim with them, in which they paid me $50 towards the $500 cost of the heated windshield. They said it fell into their "glass classification" which was limited to a max of $50. Luckily, Hyundai reimbursed me the rest. Hyundai eventually quit using UPS and now use FedEx. I still get all Suzuki shipments from UPS through, without issue for going on 7 years now.

Do you have an account with them? (have an account #, ship stuff prepaid, use their worldship software, ect...). If so you have an "account manager", even if you've never met them. That's what I've found to be the path of least resistance.

Before that I went through their online process (sign in to your account and there's a link under support for claims). It takes a bit of time, but is do-able (and we've never insured crap). Document w/pics how it was received, and tell the recipient to hang onto the package it arrived in. When you talk to anyone, be sure you are adamant that you followed their guidelines (2" of packing surrounding everything...), and that it was received in a different package than shipped in.

They know how things (don't) work at the hubs. They are out to watch the bottom line, but are usually pretty decent if treated in kind, and can easily see they aren't getting taken for a ride.

I'll be @ work 8-5 tomorrow and checking my PMs, holler if there's anything I can do to help. One of our warehouse guys is a PT supervisor at night at brown, may be able to get a hold of some phone numbers if you need (UPS is good at hiding a lot of the more useful ones).

Good luck, hopefully you won't need it.

Re: Dealing with UPS

I have had several dealings with UPS claims.
I can tell you this: They will always deny your first attempts at a claim. (most people just go away - that is what they hope for). They will tell you that it was not packaged properly so expect that to be told to you and just keep at them!

im a UPS driver for the past 5yrs. i worked in the "hub" unloading trailers for a year before that.i know what goes on before the driver gets the package. i always let my cust check the package before they sign for it. fortunatly/unfortunatley ups made (net) 500million the second quarter this year and they don't like go give back any of their money.

There is always small claims court. Regardless what ups says they are limited to pay, whatever the court awards, they have to pay.

Re: Dealing with UPS

Good luck with them. I work for a chemical company and we used to ship hazardous materials with them. Now understand that the costs to ship this stuff is 10 to 20 times the cost of the normal package due to the hazards involved and special handling required.

They damaged a package that contained a 20 liter PLASTIC container that held $20k of a special liquid resin solution used in the mfg of microchips and mems. These containers are tested and certified just for the purpose used. This includes the box it ships in. They claimed that the package was not properly designed to be used for these materials and denied the claim.

Even though we had all the certification paperwork, including pictures of the box that look like it was use in the beginning of Ace Ventura, they were willing to lose an account worth close to $2 MILLION a year so they did not have to pay $20k.

This is the mentality you are dealing with.

Re: Dealing with UPS

UPS stands for utterly poor service. Used to ship 75 pound boxes with them a few times a week for about 10 years. To get a claim payed is an act of god. They have every excuse in the book. Its takes persistent bitching and calling and talking to supervisors and their so called supervisors to get it paid. Some of the claims I had were $3500 boxes that came up missing. As if I will forget about it and just let it go. Few cases took a year to get paid. The trophy was I went to the hub one night to ship at their customer counter. 80 pound box. I watch the "worker" pick it up off the table for the woman working at the register. He tossed it towards the conveyer that was about 8 ft away. It missed, box exploded. The manager was standing right there. I said what the ****. She says well it needs to be packed better to withstand a 3-4 ft drop if "need be". They gave me supplys to repack it and gave me a really whole hearted sorry. I use Fedex ground now. Less expensive. They are a lot easier to deal with for claims. Most of all regardless of the carrier if you do have a direct account and ship a lot with them, you stand a better chance of getting a claim processed. Still not the best odds but its better. My buddys company stopped using UPS because they screwed him on about $10,000 on damaged claims for a couple race transmissions. One they even split the case in two on a new unit. Course its his fault for the packaging, for sure. Always the person shipping who is at fault. Not the monkeys throwing shit off the conveyors, trucks, rail cars. They lost a million dollars a year from his account being closed.

Re: Dealing with UPS

Its funny..... because everything that has been said about UPS here, is exactly how I feel about Fed-Ex.

99% of the time I wont buy from places who ship Fed-Ex, because I know 4 out of 5 times, the item will arrive broke, damaged, or just never show up at all. I almost shit when my turbos were shipped Fed-Ex, by 7pm they still weren't at my house so I ended up driving 5 miles and found the truck on the road at another stop. I got my package and went home, thankfully everything was ok.

It just seems like wherever one company is bad, the other one is good..... strange.

Re: Dealing with UPS

Hope you have luck getting the claim processed. I do have the best luck with Fedex ground on 90% of what comes to me. And almost 100% of what I ship with them. One of the better Fedex claims I had was a turbo kit came up missing in a NJ hub. They scanned it into the building. For a week they looked for it but it grew legs and dissapeared. About a month later a kid calls, from a fedex number on the caller ID and asks what year car this turbo kit fits. I start asking him questions where he got it and what he putting it on. Didn't get far as he hung up. All the while my claim was in process. I finally get a super on the phone from that hub. He did some investigation and figured out who took the kit. I was paid in a couple days from that point. Had a similar problem with a UPS driver out here. He would deliver car parts to my house and get his buddies to drive through my sub and pick them back up. Least my neighbor watched it happen the one day. I went to the hub and talked to the drivers manager. The very next day the same driver came to my house, with the manager riding shotgun on the route all day, and he had my claim paperwork for me to sign. Guess they had trouble firing him right away. The week before this same smartass driver kept trying to trick me into signing the claim paperwork that I DID recieve all my stuff. Was trying to read the form he had and he kept saying hurry he had to go. Oh the irony of these crooks.
