One last shot... Breaking up!

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

gee ! bad fuel pump ring a bell !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't even know why I'm going to waste my time responding to this but sometimes I just can't ignore stupidity... The fuel pump did not fail, and the pump is not bad. When I originally installed the pump I did not upgrade the wiring... The additional amperage draw of the larger pump through the factory wiring caused the wires to heat up and burn off the insulation. Yes this was a problem, and yes I'm glad I took the tank out to change the pump/wiring, but NO the pump is not the cause of what I have going on. A Fuel pump can not fail at 1500, 1900, and 2500 consistently. Also a failing pump would not allow me to run 68psi and perfect WOT 18psi numbers. I took the tank down for a piece of mind and get out the fake walbro and put a real one in and to prove that is NOT the pump. I appreciate your ignorance because my determination to prove you wrong is what made me take the tank out and I'm glad I did. I fixed a potential problem but not the problem I'm having....

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

And Berzeker if you took the time to read through this thread and each post instead of just looking at pictures you would probably know the facts and understand things better. That's just me giving you the benefit of the doubt based on the "intellegence" you've had to offer. I did not get a chance to put the tank back in last night but IF the pump by some miracle fixes my issue I will be the first one to come back on here to apologize and admit I was wrong.

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

Well I finally got the fuel tank back in the truck.. between work and a week vacation I didn't have the time. Anyways just as I suspected the FUEL PUMP was NOT the issue. However, I am glad I pulled the tank and changed the pump and sending unit because they were a potential problem. I'm going to change injectors next.. I scored a free set of Denso 690cc (66lb per hour) injectors for free but I don't think they'll work. The harness plugs in but they came from a mitsu 3000gt Vr4 so I would imagine they're not the same. I couldn't get that lucky! So the quest is on for injectors..

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

I had a very similar issue like this on an old Chevelle with a MSD Distributor the optical Eye in it went bad and it was only 6 months old! I chased the issue for ever and a buddy finely said put this Old HEI dist. in it and see what happens. I was amazed! issue was gone! I have never used an MSD Dist. again! EVER! 2 of my other friends have had issues with them as well as Mallory's uni lite dist.
I read the hole post but I didnt see anything where you said you changed the Dist. out for another one. Or I may have read over it an missed. I just hope you find the issue soon I know all to well the frustration of not being able to make things right. :(

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

You are not the first to suggest an issue with an MSD dist. I did not swap it out with another but I changed the cap, rotor, ign module, and magnetic coil pick-up. I'm not sure what else could go wrong with it since I changed all the vital internals...

If you can find another dist. try it never know couldnt hurt and its easy :) I dont know exactly what went wrong with the ones Ive seen go bad but for what ever reason at the NMCA Race a few weeks back at Milan I noticed more than a few racers had extra MSD dist. in there trailers

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

He already has replaced the important parts in the distributer. The only thing left is the housing, the shaft and the gear. None of these would have any logical possibility to his problem. MSD is a very popular distributer. Simply by the law of averages, they have more of a possibility to have a problem because there are more of them out there in use than others. They certaintly are not a company that produces junk, as some think.

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

I dont think they make junk just had issues with them a few years back. From what I have been told they have improved there quality a lot over the years. Heck I run a Digi 6 in my GN :) and its interfaced with the stock coil set up :) Works bad AZZ! I was just trying to help :)
Sorry Im a dumb but

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

Thunderrace I certainly appreciate your trying to help. Like I said you are not the first to mention a problem with MSD products. I too have had my issues, I had a mechanical advance in a billet dist act up and the header pipes would glow orange on my SBC El Camino. I chased it forever until someone suggested locking out the mech advance and it went away. I've had 2 or 3 MSD 7AL-3 boxes just quit working in my dragster and I wasn't the only one around the track to have that happen, also my friend had an MSD box in 3000gt VR4 that when it hit 3k rpms it would stumble and go lean everytime. I chased that for a while before I put in an HKS ign control and the problem went away. I'm not saying they're junk either but issues have popped up with them. I agree with Turboj, there are so MSD products out there in many forms so the odds of hearing issues are greater.

If I had another dist to swap in I would do it just for a piece of mind because its easy and hey ya never know! However I am not convinced enough to buy another stocker from auto zone for whatever they cost just to try one...

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

I agree :)
Im following this as I like many here are interested to know what it is thats causing the issues :)
Good luck Im sure you will find it soon :)

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

I hope I get it figured out soon! It's been 3 months of chasing this and the truck is just rotting away in my driveway!

Unfortunately my only other option is to sell the motor and trans since they're both fairly fresh and part the truck out to follow. I don't want to do it but I'm running out of options and patience. I appreciate everyone following this thread and offer their insight and suggestions.

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

I have a question for you. Do #1 & #6 plug wires have straight boots? If not, that is what cause my issue. I know how you feel, in 04, I had a similar problem, took me four months to figure it out and I found it because my friend was being a cock bag and started blasting me with windex while the truck was running. We heard arching. I had MSD wires that I made custom and used 90* boots at 1 & 6 causing it to break up at those same rpms. Only difference would be that mine would get worse and worse until it just wouldn't really run. I am also wondering, have you switched tunes? I'd be interested in looking at your DM file, maybe I can help out too.

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

Mike #1 and #6 do indeed have straight boots. I tried spraying down the wires with water to see if I could make them ark and I even Ohm tested them. Upon further examination I noticed they were dry rotting a little bit so I swapped them out with a new set of Taylor wires. Needless to say the issue is still there. I will send you some DM files when I get home from work. The only thing that really changes specifically when it hits those RPM spots are the O2 numbers drop and the WB numbers rise both indicating a lean condition. Everything else appears normal

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

have you tried to add fuel at those spots on the fuel map? and see what happens?

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

I forgot to add that I did try a few different .bin files I had saved on computer and that made no difference. I even tried running the stock chip just see (still using 50lbers, 3 bar map) but the problem still existed

I have TunerProRT on my comp, I have .bin files that Nolan sent me, and I have chip burner but I don't know the first thing about making changes to a .bin? I'm not running code $59 so I never got into doing my own tunes. I wish I had a clue when it came to this

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

Nr.6 plug was wet, problem gets worse with fuelpressure increase , gets better with boost and started after you changed the fp sensor?
I guess something got nr.6 injector stuck open.

Re: One last shot... Breaking up!

Autometer elec FP gauge and took out Air/Fuel gauge. (Could be total coincidence??) Didn't drive the truck 4 days after I installed the gauge, but it ran perfect when I parked it the day I did the install. I've done a lot so there's going to be a lot of info to try and save some suggestions so bear with me.

from your post, if it started right after you did this you have found where the problem originated, check that wireing and did you have to move any other wires when removing the a/f guage?
