I want to re-clear my wheels - spray gun questions

The clear is just about gone from my wheels, so I was thinking about stripping, cleaning, and spraying a new coat of clear to keep them looking good. I have a compressor, but no spray gun. Looking at harbor freight tools, They have a few different guns that should work for a reasonable price.

I'd like to buy a gun that could spray something larger than a wheel down the road, but my compressor is only good for 8 cfm @ 40 psi.

Some of the guns are described as "detail" and some others are not. Are the detail guns only good for small items? The guns they list without the "detail" designation all require upwards of 14 cfm except for one, ITEM 90977-0VGA, which requires 6 cfm @ 30 psi. Is this really a detail gun? Would this smaller compressor requirement hvlp gun be able to spray a hood for example, or do I need a 14 cfm gun and compressor to spray something that large?

Mt compressor does 7.1 CFM @ 40 PSI and 5.7 CFM @ 90 PSI and I have never had a problem using a HVLP or conventional spray gun.

You want to spray clear with a conventional gun as the HVLP will not atomize the clear well enough and you will end up with and orange peel finish..

I could be wrong but I always thought that our rims had a clear powder coat on them.. I'm not sure that conventional clear would hold up on rims..

Thats where I got my guns..

Hmmm, maybe I'll have to buy one of those powdercoating set-ups and an old oven.

Our wheels came with a regular clear coat. The clear on my wheels was stripped by the previous owner  and CO winter's did them in...

I'm having them redone eventually and will have them powdercoated. I think the powdercoat will hold up better to all the road junk that gets thrown at the wheels... at least here in CO.

I've been told by a few powder caoting shops that they would NOT recomend doing wheels because of the outgassing that aluminum does. They recommended just polishing them real well. And that wasn't just one shop, it was 3-4 places that all said the same thing. :2cents:

My cousin works for a place that specializes in refurbishing aluminum/alloy wheels, chroming bumpers, etc. He said that with their process of refinishing the wheel and then having it powdercoated, it would come out great and last against the MagChloride used on the roads here. I've seen other work they do and I'm willing to give it a shot. If it doesn't last like he said, I'll just go back and have them chromed, because I know that will last.

But thanks for the info. I'll have to double check with him about that
