Stock fan or electric?

Mine has an electric that is hard wired to key on. I didn't do it, bought it that way. It is 15" and only the top shroud is there and that is only on with 1 screw. Thoughts?...Jim

Re: Stock fan or electric?

Sorry, should have been more clear. A stock clutch fan vs. a correctly installed electric fan with a controller. I realize it is not correct the way it is now, just trying to decide on which direction to go. Thanks...Jim

Re: Stock fan or electric?

I say keep all the stock clutch fan stuff just in case you want to go back to it. Run two 12" electric fans on a 30 amp fuse with a toggle switch so you can just turn them on and off at your command. Its nice to be able to run your fans with the truck turned off. Its a good way to keep things cool at the drag strip and while your sitting in the staging lanes. I have run this way all spring so far and it works real well.
People say you cant feel some mods perfromance wise but I think the E fans helped me pick up some noticable power.

Rookie - can i see some pictures or maybe get some part numbers. I notice my truck currently runs at normal temps but i am an a/c guy and i know in the summer time when i want to take it out for a ride i am going to need more cooling. My past experience is that i need to shut off a/c if im in a MINOR traffic jam or just cruising lightly becasue the temp goes up fast. I already have the 160 thermostat but i dont think thats good enough. So any info would be appreciated.

thanks

Re: Stock fan or electric?

I say ditch the stock and electric fan. Go with a plastic fan instead just bolted to the pump, you'll need a spacer but thats it. You get rid of the dead weight can pull more air and not draw off you electrical system. Win, win, win.

Do not go flex fan unless you want the fan to flex into your radiator.

how do i find more info on this plastic fan. Do you use it if so any pictures or write ups? You say it will just bolt to factory location correct?

Years ago (in the 70's) a car magazine, I think it was Car Craft or Popular HotRodding, did a test of radiator fans on a Chevelle. The stock clutch fan made the most horsepower and best cooling combination. If the clutch is working correctly, there isn't any drain of horspower on the motor at speed and you don't have to worry about the motor burning out, fuse blowing, or relay failing. That does not take into account advances made in materials since then. An electric fan does give a little more room to work.

I had put one in my Camaro (don't own the Camaro anymore) but in all that did the best cooling for me, especially when I lived in So.Cal.

1st I had the dead weight stock unit but you less weight is always good so I switched to a flex fan, on one very cold night I floored it and it ended up looking like a gernade went off in my engine compartment because the fan flexed into my radiator so then I decided on electric, bah! It messed with my smog test when they checked my RPM digitally so not needing another electrical draw on my system I found this black heavy duty plastic fan (might of said something to do with racing) at an Automotive store, light as can be. Sadly the store is no longer and I haven't seen them in the standard PepBoys or Checker/Kragen/Shucks either. I don't know if I have any pictures of it or not but I can try looking later.

If I can find one again I'll be putting it on my SGT too.

I dont have any current pictures. All I did was go to Autozone and bought two 12" electric fans. You just use the plastic anchors that the fans come with to mount them. You just push the anchors through the fins in the radiator. I wired them in parallel so they are voltage dividers and not a current dividers. I then just hooked a rocker switch up in the cab were the fog light switch is. I got a switch that really lights up so I rember to turn them on and off. If you need some pictures let me know. I will be happy to help you out. My truck runs really cool. The temp gauge never goes above the bottom quarter hash mark.

Like I said. I like the fact that I can open my hood and keep the fans running with the truck off. Gets things cooled off at the drag strip. I also beleive if you're driving highway the natural air flow of 60 mph winds blowing through the radiator is suficient enough. Its the stops that the fan is really needed. Removing the giant shroud and heavy clutch fan makes the engine bay clean up real nice.

electric fans are the way to go, more room less clutter, you can switch it on while truck is off, and you can get a stainless radiator mount

i agree with brassmonkey, stick with the stock fan!

Brassmonkey is a crazy old man, dont listen to him. :rotf:

kidding Mel, going to the lake next weekend?

I like the electric for drag racing especially, along with elec water pump you can do some serious cooling between rounds. and yeah most of my driving is on the street with this set up, works fine for me.

There's obviously pros and cons to both, I find myself checking the water temp often because i know those cheap relays i have on it WILL fail one of these days.

I have that write up but it won't scan do to it being too dark and messing around with the settings didn't help.

Why not remove the studs off of your pump and replace them with bolts?

Good point. Just happy to have my truck back together again.
Inch treaded bolts costs their weight in gold over here, in the metric part of the world

Re: Stock fan or electric?

Im just trying to make my truck run cooler. I drove it yesterday and it was about 70 degrees not 95 like it is today and i have to say when you opened the hood it was like it was on fire. HOT. Yes i know motors get hot but dam this thing was buring. Is this just the way it is or can i make it cooler running some more fans.
