1993 GMC Typhoon For Sale (Something doesn't seem right)

Still on the hunt of a Typhoon and I saw this up for sale:

Pretty detailed on the info of body and motor but doesn't give the number. "Like New, very low miles, original and no abuse adult owned. No oil leaks, clean undercarriage, pictures upon request. Typhoon was stored on upper rack and limited use as it should be run, previous owner gearghead engineer over 20 years owned Small half the size of a pinky nail nick in head liner, 3 inch light scratch passenger side rear panel. "

Also it says Boston but if you look at the pictures I never saw a palm tree in Boston.

Anyone have any insight into the vehicle?

Nice looking Typhoon. I would contact them and see if they would send more information. Also most likely Snow Birds that have two homes (one North and one South) my guess. It is Strange looking at a STOCK engine bay now days!!!!

As you see there are more questions than answers.

PoconoJoe - Nice to see a Southeastern PA member. New here and it seems like most vehicles never made it for an extended period here.

Emailed to get more photos and info along with the last 4 digitals of the VIN

New to the forum and notice very quickly that everyone know each other along with the vehicles. With less than 5000 Typhoons out there someone will know something about this one.

Was in the DSM community for about 6 years but wasn't as limited production as the SyTy

I'm actually in northeast PA but close enough. There is about a dozen owners in the area. We use to get together once or twice a year but now most of us just do the truck show at Carlisle. Sports Machines arranges for us to get building Y. You'll need to show up next year, since it's the 30th anniversary of the Syclone.

Hope to have the Ty by then. Been into the auto scene for years (Import and Classic cars). Opening my mind to trucks now.

Sounds crazy to think a Syclone / Typhoon is an antique/classic car. I remember seeing them in the showroom.

Looking for a good driving vehicle, not looking for something 100% perfect so driving won't be an issue.

Maintenance history is important but the mileage is not. If the car has 100,000 and never had a rebuild or maintenance I'd walk away.

Don't want to end up with a major project on my hands.

After 25 years experience with these trucks, I'm of the opinion that the best way to "end up with a major project" is to purchase a SyTy that HAS been "worked on" by almost anybody. It is just amazing how fucked up these trucks can be if they are not unmolested originals.

A good indication of "proper maintenance" is that if hasn't required any major work, but it is still running, not leaking, and is complete, it probably has lived an easy life without being beat on or chipped, or been the victim of ill-conceived poorly-executed modifications.

I watch SyTy auctions on bringatrailer. I never see anyone mention if original engines and transmissions are present. I never see anyone state how far the crankshaft was turned down or the bore size, or which head gaskets were used during the "rebuild". No one ever mentions if the truck will pass emissions or safety inspections. 30 year old stock SyTy probably will. They will also have stock diameter crankshafts and cyl bores that give more options when it IS time to work on it.

In closing, I have a 93 Ty I've owned and maintained since 1997. 23 years. Engine has never been out, the valve covers have been off once for stem seals. I've taken it across the country and back 3 times without opening the hood. I'd leave tomorrow on another cross country. At 120xxx miles now and it runs fine. Yes, it has required maintenance, and stuff goes wrong with it like it will with any other GM of the era, but it is as reliable as almost any other POS GM I've owned.

You'll do best with something that has never been worked on. If you can find such a truck. Happy hunting.

Dave is correct as usual. I have owned trucks that have been "worked"on and stock trucks and have learned the hard way that keeping them as close as you can to stock is the only way to go. They are pretty reliable in stock form. Most of the time when non-stock type parts are added like turbos, injectors and the like. They normally take a lot more upkeep. Even when the best parts are used and the work was done by someone that knows what they are doing. But usually the work was done by someone that is a bubba and then you have a real mess.

Thanks for the input helping me on the research on the purchase. I have gotten several individuals reach out to be so far concerning this post which is great.

From basic changes of electric fans and bolt-on aftermarket parts to a fully rebuilt motor.

Hopefully I can get some pictures on the vehicles they selling which aren't on the web.

Buying a Syclone/Typhoon/GN is totally different ball game from when I bought a 67 Camaro and Nova back in the 80's.

Parts on those GMs were so easy to find and not a single computer involved.

Well the guy emailed me today concerning this vehicle.

Say he never drive the vehicle because he works overseas for multiple years at a time.

Going to get more info and see the mileage.

I recall seeing this truck being for sale within the last year or so. At the time, it was located in the Phoenix area.
