$349 Complete Drum to Disc Conversion

I read an article in Minitruckin' that featured "the little shop of horrors" custom fab shop. They sell two kits, one for 82-91, and one for 92-04. They claim to be complete kits to convert your drums to disc, and according to them you don't even need to remove your axles. All parts can be replaced when needed from your local autoparts, no special high dollar or one-off pieces. Best of all their kits are only $349, unless you want an e-brake then the kit is $498.

Has anyone had any experience with these? From the looks of the flange the 92-04 kit seems to be the correct ones for our trucks. Would the correct kit be the 92-04 for a Sy? For a build on a budget it seems like a deal.

I would think you would need a 82-91 kit for Syclone. The rear axle on your Syclone should have a 3 bolt backing plate. The 92 up rear ends have 4 bolt backing plates.

not sure how you would remove the backplates without removing axles.

If someone gets this, get me PNs of the pads/calipers and I'll see what OE vehicle they fit (looks like 154 pads with an A-Body caliper).

I would think you would need a 82-91 kit for Syclone. The rear axle on your Syclone should have a 3 bolt backing plate. The 92 up rear ends have 4 bolt backing plates.

I agree, you are correct, but they say to compare the flange plates to your axle, and the bracket for 82-91 has a third hole way off. I don't know if this hole hits the place where the stud is for the drum brakes, or there is something different altogether on other trucks.

I was leaning toward the newer kit cause it seems like it would hit all three bolts on our flange.

I emailed them yesterday, but haven't received a response. Also I can't download their instructions to verify.

Their is nothing special about our rear axle compare to regular S-10/S-15. I can tell you that our 3rd hole does not line up with the 4 bolt 92 up backing plate.

Sort of off topic but not really, Is the 3 bolt flange a different offset from the four bolt flange. I only ask because I was talking to Tobin at KORE3 today and they sell a 1 piece bracket for the rear of the four bolt flange in order to install C6 caliper to the rear, but he said he is not sure if the offset is the same for the 3 bolt flange.

I know when I did 98-02 discs on my first Sy it had the 3 bolt flange and what I did was bolt up the backing plate on the 2 bottom bolts, then marked my holes and drilled the other 2 holes. Then I pulled the backing plate off and cut the top off to make it a fabricated 4 bolt flange. I don't know if they worked right or not because I sold that project to Harmon when I bought this current one.

I wouldnt bother the LS1 stuff is cheaper if you shop and has better calipers those "parking brakes" suck

The bottom 2 bolt holes are the same, just have to be drilled larger on the older axles, and drill the top 2 if you want them, and as mentioned, cut off the top piece. I got a set of IROC rear disks that I used on my S10, they work great, were cheap, easy to do, parking brake will work and the pads are the same as the fronts.

I aasked him about the kit, and about the backing plates. His email:

Hey man. Just noticed I didn't respond to you on this. I had another email about a 91 Syclone and I thought this was with that! Funny that you both emailed at the same time. To answer your question, the 91 is a split year so it could go either way. You can either take a pic of the back of the drum and email me that or just compare what you have to the pics on the site of the brake bracket pictures. On the backing plates, we just cut them off from around the axle since it's not really worth the time pulling the axles to save them.

I just sent Eric an email with pictures of the flange on my Syclone. I'll wait and see what he says.

My guess is that the offsets should be about the same, the only possible difference would be the thickness of the rotor vs. the thickness of the drum. Again, just a guess, I don't know for sure.
