5 gal Ice heat exchanger

Recently installed one of these in the bed running the lines thru the front passenger fender, using 20# of bagged ice I was able to monitor intercooler water temps fall to 33 degrees while the engine was running. Now looking into placing a metal canister filled with dry ice into the box, of course routing a vent tube allow the expanding gas to escape.

Maybe I am a complicated guy but Id rather just spray meth. Takes up far less room, gives you very cool temps on a hot day and increases your octane rating drastically.

Why not both? IAT's can never be too cold IMO.

tried to upload pictures but it failed.

fairly certain only donating members can upload pictures to the site. everyone else needs another photo hosting site. picasa gives good storage options if you have gmail. photobucket is nice. and there are others.

Ice box are good for drag strip, but with the pre intercooler intake temps in the 175-200 degree range it will quickly warm and melt all the ice on the street.

Ive seen people fart around with ice boxs at the track, it looks like a lot more work than I would want to go through. And, it takes up a lot of room.

Re: 5 gal Ice heat exchanger

Actually I am using both, Spraying 1210cc's of vp fuel M1 on 93 octane. I'm using a heat exchanger with a 10" 2100cfm electric fan during street use. All mounted away from under the hood. Completely wrapped the original IC in thermotec heat shield to prevent (or slow down) heat soak. At the track I just bring a ice chest full of 10# bags of ice, The IC actually will sweat from the cold. Still haven't had time to rig up a dry ice chamber to drop down in the ice mixture to further drop temps. I've learned that if the liquid keeps moving it wont all freeze solid. So far I've managed 35psi boost with a GTX 3582R.

Are you still using the ATR heat exchanger?

If so, that is heating up the water you are trying to cool down.

Re: 5 gal Ice heat exchanger

I'm using a kenne bell cold air box that uses sheet metal to block off hot under hood air from the fender where the k&n filter draws cool air.

No longer using the ATR kit, only have about 6 feet of hose under the hood (3 feet coming in and 3 feet going out) both hoses wrapped with a heat sleeve to further shield from ambient heat.

Re: 5 gal Ice heat exchanger

need to get up to 25 posts so I can put some parts up for sale in the sales forum. My job takes up so much of my time (truck driver).

anyone not able to see the pics in the links Ive posted?

Re: 5 gal Ice heat exchanger

I built and installed this ice tank in Sy #1557 about 20 years ago (before many people were using meth). It was hidden and used existing holes. When packed with ice, the intercooler would get so cold that it would get condensation like a beer fresh out of the fridge. Even without ice, the added water volume significantly dropped the intake temps. It was one of my favorite mods...
