50# chip upgrade

Being busy with summer chores, I took my typhoon to my mechanic to install upgrades including PTE 51 turbo with down pipe and cat, APR, Taylor wires, Conrad cap and rotor, 50# injectors(MSD checked out OK), 50# ultimate chip for stock heads w/cam upgraded turbo, 3 Bar map sensor, MDS blaster coil. Also had TDC checked and was OK. Timing set a 0 degrees with wire disconnected. Already had KB cam and ATR superflow in tank pump. Set fuel pressure at 50#. After installed the chip, truck wouldn't start and security mode not visible. Reversed chip in the ultimate carrier and truck started in T115 mode. Smoked black and ran poorly at idle with 3 Bar sensor. ran less rich with 2 Bar sensor. I have not used the Datamaster yet, but have it. Must go through learning curve. When chip was installed, battery was disconnected. When do I go from here? I'm thinking of reinstalling the 33# lucas injectors and reverting to stock chip so I can regroup and solve this problem. Mechanic clock running and must reassume control of project. Suggestions?

If this is the first time starting with cam/ new motor etc, I'd definitely start with the stock injectors & chip. If you have ran it on those already, let's start figuring out what's wrong with the 50's and chip etc. You should trim the retaining clip that holds the chip into the ECM, so the chip seats fully. The memcal needs to be arranged correctly on the chip hardware as well. If you look inside the memcal (or take the blue cover off) you'll see one side has an eprom chip on it, that chip should line up with the Ultimate eprom.

Get back to me after you verify those issues.

50 # upgrade

50 # upgrade

Sorry I posted to the wrong category. I trimmed the tab and ultimate chip with memcal properly seated properly. memcal lined up with ultimate. Same problem. Smoking exhaust from rich mixture and rough idle. Removed ultimate and ran with memcal. No improvement noted. Mechanic ran error check and all sensors checked out. Vacuum at 10-14 lbs and fluctuating. Had low vacuum (9-10 lbs) before upgrade install, but truck ran well. Compression 165-170 lbs per cylinder. Smoke test for vacuum leaks was done during upgrade. EGR leaked and small throttle shaft leak. Replaced EGR. Could my computed be intermittently malfunctioning or did I damage the chip/memcal when I had the ultimate in backwards? Battery was always disconnected when removing/installing chips. I'm about ready to reinstall the 33# Lucas injectors to see if the used MSD #50's are the problem. They were flow tested and leak tested, put out 49lbs at 43.5 psi.

Try 42 psi, 50 psi is only for the stock injector cal. Not sure that 8# would cause your truck to run this bad, but you never know.

just pointing out two things...

He had a 2bar map sensor...

E-Rue runs FP in the 30's... I wanna say 35psi or so...

So...you tried running 50psi on an ultimate w/ 2bar map sensor w/ 50lb injectors....then you swapped to a stock (ish) memcal running what psi? and 50lb injectors...

You've got a lot of variables here...BG's right...on where to start.

Yeah, please clarify a bit.

Did you have it running fine, and the *only* thing you changed was the chip then it ran crappy? Need to start eliminating variables here, if it ran fine with this and this part, and you change 5 things at once, and you have problems.. you know what could have caused it. If you ONLY changed the chip, we know to look only at that as the possible issue.

With the 50s, you should have your FP set at 43 psi or so (base). E has a different calibration and these will run different. The WOT fueling is getting better and better, so as to not require the lower FP settings for best performance.

So, clear this up for us...
Did you have the 3 bar sensor in?
Did you set any codes when it ran crappy?
Did you run it with lower fuel pressure?

Vacuum at 10-14 lbs and fluctuating. Had low vacuum (9-10 lbs) before upgrade install, but truck ran well

normal engines should have 19" of vacuum at idle. The vacuum gauge should not fluctuate. I would suspect the intake gasket or more likely a fuel injector seal (the bottom one). You could also have a wiped out cam lobe. That will give you a fluctuating vacuum gauge. A bad miss will also give the same results.
What kind of smoke test was done to check for vacuum leaks?
What is the oxygen sensor reading at idle (when the car is warmed up)? If it is reading lean (vacuum leak) then the computer will dump fuel into the engine to compinsate for the extra air, this could cause a miss. what are the mS readings on the injector pulse width?
I would go back to stock chip, 33 psi injectors, and 2 bar map sensor. If the car runs fine then he either fixed the problem with a new seal or gasket the was improperly installed the first time or the chip got messed up by being in backwards.
Either way you will now have a good reference point to fixing this tempermental beast.

No codes were set. The truck ran so rich that black smoke and outrageous fuel consumption that the 50# chips were removed and the 33# Lucas injectors were replaced. The truck runs fine retured to stock chip and injectors. Maybe I fried the 50# ultimate when I had it in backwards not knowing when the index mark was. Maybe the 50# injectors are high impedence instead of low. The injector # on the 50# is 17104487. I also posted injector # question on HOW TO MOD/REPAIR.

OH YEAH, THE FUEL PRESSURE WAS SET AT 43.5 AND THE 3 BAR SENSOR WAS IN.(ACTUALLY RAN WORSE WITH THE 3 BAR THAN THE 2 BAR WITH THE 50# ULTIMATE AND 50# INJECTORS.

Ok just saw this. Several threads on the same problem is confusing.

You should send it back to me, I can verify it works on our truck here. Problem is I'm out of town next week, so It'd be a bit before it gets back to you.

PM or email me.

Arghghghghg

You sent me back only the eprom, I'm nearly certain that the eprom is fine. You should have sent me the full chip hardware.

Got it Monday I think, I'll test it this week and let you know.

email me instead of posting to the board tho
