60-1 wheel install for low dollar. TDO6H-20 G turbo

Just been working on upgrading my TDO6H-20G turbo.
I plan on installing a 60-1 Garrett compressor wheel.
Prices for parts are as follow.
60-1 wheel $80.00 shipped to US
TDO6 rebuild kit $70.00 Shipped.
Piece of three inch 3x 3 billet stock $8.00

I have done machineing myself to the center/cartridge section to fit the 60-1 wheel.
Now I am in the process of machineing the compressor wheel to fit onto the cartridge.
The only thing I cannot machine is the compressor cover/housing to fit the new 60-1 wheel.
So I am sending that work out.$100.00
Plus $100.00 for balance & assemble.(rough estimate)

It is a hassle to do this type of work, but if you are into stock appearing turbo, this is the way to go.
I will post pics when I get a chance to.
These turbos are really easy to work on!!!

Re: 60-1 wheel install for low dollar. TDO6H-20 G turbo

Here are some pics of my finished stock turbo compressor housing w/a 60-1 wheel installed. Stock turbo next to it also.
I like to try & have a stealthy look w/maximum CFM!
I straightened out the airflow on the compressor exit.
The turbo originally was a TO6H-20G 14 cm exhaust housing.
Now it is a TDO6H-60-1G ;) with a 12 CM exhaust housing,w/a stock machined compressor housing & 3" inlet.

Nice looking machining. Is it the exhaust side you can't get done? What kinda power/cfm gains are you going to be looking at?

Thanks,
I could not machine the radius (on the compressor housing) that follows the compressor wheels radius.
I'm guessing around 800 CFM range? 65 lb/min?
20G wheel is 44lb/min ,I think ?
Power wise,I might out of injector w/this compressor wheel. Maybe I could get 400 HP?
I made 386 HP with the 20G compressor wheel.

Your doing a real nice job, but I gotta ask why spend the money doing this when you can pick up a 60-1 for about the same price.. Thats a lot of money to spend on trying to make a stock looking 60-1 imo.. :dunno:

Thanks for the complement!
I spent $158.00 total. Plus shipping there $12.00
The company that did the machineing on the compressor housing & balanceing, damaged my compressor housing.
They did the work for free plus free return shipping.
Not sure if you consider that a lot of money??

I wanted a semi stock looking turbo, that will work with my stock downpipe.
Previous quote ,,,,,"I like to try & have a stealthy look w/maximum CFM!"

I am just into stock appearing stuff ,,my fault for being that way.

I think that's very well priced even if you had to pay for some machining.

fyi, we could have carved the comp cover and balanced the rotating group at the shop. Just did a custom turbo today that Turbonetics told us "could not be done"

We found out it can be.

would have cost you more, since we probably wouldn't have messed up your housing.. :)

That's a good point also! We need to pass underhood visual inspection.

I am pretty interested in this turbo setup. What would you charge to build one?

I have a spare compressor housing.
PM me a price to machine the inlet to fit the 60-1 wheel.
Thanks

Waller says he does these also.
I think he wants $700 with your good core.

The issue you will most likely run into is this. Unless you have the "pinned" 360 degree thrust bearing mod done to your cartridge. The large compressor wheel will put a lot more load on the stock bearings and shaft. Hybrid turbos like this tend to live a shorter life. We used to use the Syclone TD06H turbos as a base for DSM's. But with To4E 50 and 60 trim and 60-1 compressor wheels.
Turbonetics may have said it can't be done. Anything can be done with machining. From a peformance standpoint, reliability or durability can be a different issue altogether.
There are a lot of turbo co's out there that can built about any hybrid you dream up at reasonable prices. Nothing wrong with trying new things either. What on paper doesn't look like it will work often does in the real world and vice a versa.

fyi, the turbo that turbonetics said couldnt be done had nothing to do with these turbos or even sytys. just was pointing out the fact we can make custom turbos, balance and machine them all in house. Not really interested in dealing with these hybrids, but carving a cover is not a big deal. rick i'll PM you.

It has the pinned updated 360 degree thrust bearing.
Plus it has the updated oil passage.

It runs very well I took it out last Sunday I beat an SS 400 HP Trailblazer w/my A/F ratios of 14.5 to1 & 15.0 to 1 .I did not have it dialed in @ the time,I just got it running & took it around the block & found a race.by chance

Re: 60-1 wheel install for low dollar. TDO6H-20 G turbo

Took the Sy out again w/the 60-1 compressor wheel.
My fuel pressure is too high,IIRC 55 psi.
Looked @ the A/F ratios started out @ 11.7 then got richer @ richer the longer I stayed into it like as rich as 10.8.

So,, all & all it seems I do not run out of injector & it does seem to pull harder than ever on the top end.
I thought I would run out of injector?

I have the old style radar STG chip.

Re: 60-1 wheel install for low dollar. TDO6H-20 G turbo

I took the Sy out yesterday after I changed out a leaking EGR valve gasket.

I payed more attention to the boost pressure & noticed it would boost spike up a bit more w/the 60-1 wheel as compared to the OG 20G wheel.

When I say a bit more,it was about 2-3 psi more than before ,,then it would settle down to the selected number on the Ultimate setting.

I think the MPH is better than before,I can't wait to try it @ a track soon w/some good sticky D.R.'s this time.
