can you put a 2 wd 8.5" posi in a 4wd? i know the with is 54" vs 59" do the spring perches have the same measurements, i think the 2" on each side could be made up with a offset rear wheel or wheel spacer? anybody know?

the springs should be sitting in the same place. just the rear changed not the back half of the frame. i would say its gonna be a huge BS to get them to sit flush like it does now

Yes,

The 2WD S10 housings (both 7 5/8" & 8 1/2") will fit in the 4WD S10's. The 2WD & 4WD's both have the exact same spacing on the leaf springs, so bolt-up is no problem.

I was planning to do just this same thing on my '93 V8 powered 4x4 S10 truck, since I picked up a low cost 8 1/2" rear end from out of a '00 model Extreme 5 spd S10. It even has the third shock (for eliminating wheel hop under power) and rear sway bar on it that I also intend to retrofit on my 4x4 S10. I am going to use stock 16"x8" 2WD Extreme S10 wheels on the rear, and Camaro 16"x7 1/2" steel rims (modified with centers that increase the wheel offset to a total of 76mm so that they only stick out the same amount as the 2WD models when mounted to the 4x4 front hubs) on the front with Chrysler '00 model Intrigue wheel covers on them, since they look almost identical to the Extreme wheel. The tires I am going to use are the Pirelli Scorpian Zero 255:55/16 series high performance Z rated tires. Of course, all of my wheel & tire choices are not the way to go for a Sy/Ty, but they do work well on a regular S10 body that only has the stock 1" fender flares. It does however cure the problem that stock 4x4 S10's have in that the front wheels will sit 7/8" farther inboard just like they do in the 2WD models, so it will look just like a stock 2WD S10 with the same ride height after the 4WD chassis is lowered 3". It also is a much cheaper wheel & tire combination than is run on the Sy/Ty's, and offers the same tire size on all four corners so that the tires can be rotated (although they do have to be pulled off the rims in order to do the rotation). It provides better traction than the stock Sy/Ty's have, but not quite as good as the Corvette wheel conversion with wider tires that many are going to.

No one mentioned that the gear ratios for the 4X4 must be the same for the front axle and the rear axle. Very important.

Some of the ZQ8/Extreme trucks came with the 8.5 rear end. They were 2wd and might work very well

yep its a bolt in just change the offset of the wheels and on a chassis dyno the car will post a higher peak number due to less mass to move

Re: 8.5" 2wd in a 4wd

Short answer: Yes.....More complicated answer: Not sure.

GM did build the S10 with 4wd & 8.5" rear's, so there are 4wd width 8.5's out there.

What I'm not sure of is if those 8.5's got 3.42's or not.

The other issue is finding one. Alot of junkyards think they have one, and then you look at it closely and its a 7.5" 10 bolt, not the 8.5" 10 bolt.

Also, there's one more width option: The ZR2 option has a wider axle still (like another 4"). I think they're more plentiful, since I think the ZR2 only came with the 8.5" 10 bolt, but they may be too wide unless you're already running fairly thick spacers.

4x4 s10 trucks had a 8.5 but only when they have a 4.3 with a manual or they were a zr2 zr2 rear diffs are easy to find i have only seen 2 s10 4x4 with a manual in 4 years of looking

I believe the beginning year of the 8.5" in S10s was about '96 or so. As 'Pancakes said, they're only to be found in 4.3 / 5 speed trucks. And it seems that most all 4wd trucks got the 4.3 and auto, meaning the vast majority have the 7.5".

You might check Car-Part.com They've got an online search engine that you might be able to find one with. But like I said earlier, many yards can't tell an 8.5" 10 bolt from a Dana 60, yet alone a 7.5" 10 bolt (which is suprisingly similar in general appearance).

I've got one.. Picked up up off a guy on blazinlow.com a few years ago.. Didn't really need it at the time but I know how hard they are to come by.. Its currently got 3.42s but with an open rear. He also gave me a posi unit(from a ZR2 8.5 rear) and all of the disc brake hardware.. Got everything for $200..

Well, if Foot Performance isn't interested, I certainly am. I will give him first dibs, but shipping will probably cost him as much as the axle costs.

I want to upgrade the weak 7.5 in my Bravada before I break it (since there's a 6.0l LQ4 V8 sending it power now and I still don't have the front axle back in the truck).

I'm in Baltimore, and while it wouldn't be a local pickup, it would be probably be worth the drive, especially if you'd be willing to meet somewhere south of your location.

Re: 8.5" 2wd in a 4wd

Sorry guys I'm not looking to sell it. I just posted it to show that they are out there and you can find them. I'm also working on a project that should be able to grenade a 7.5" with ease so hopefully I will be needing this soon.
