I just got my Ty and I was reading through an old C&D test of the Ty. It said you should leave it in drive, hold the brake pedal and pin the boost gauge. I launched it a few times but only @ 5 psi max. I did not look at the reading on the tach. The truck 100% stock with 73K and new tires. Is that how a stock Ty needs to be launched? It seemed like it needs more psi on the launce because after the 1-2 seconds for the spool up it really pulls.

you need to put it in n step on the brake while you push the gas down a bit. this will take the vac out of the booster so you get a better brake. this will help hold the truck beter. i can lauch mine at 10 psi.

Put it in neutral then drive after building boost = neutral drop??

put in neutral, rev gas while holding brakes hard. then countinue holding brakes and shift into drive. then start building boost.

Rev the engine in neutral once or twice while pressing the brake as hard as you can (you will feel the brake go down, due the vacuum increase in the brake booster as the engine rpm comes down) Let the RPM go back to idle before you put it in Drive.

Yeah, I can launch at 10+ psi. Reason I know this is that my alky is on at 10psi, and I launch when I see the blue light. If you REALLY get a good brake going, you can really do some killer launches.

We tested a relatively cheap mod this weekend, that let us build 15psi of boost with no signs of moving or spinning on wet pavement.

We would have tested it higher, but the rear-end limit must have been 15. OOOOOPS

I saw a pic on here a while back of where the bracket that holds the caliper bolts actually broke from someone launching. Not sure if it's still on here or not. Made a mental note of it myself...

From a Wilwood system; search under "broken" in the drivetrain / brakes forum....

Yeah, I think it's in the Multimedia section. That was just one of the many things that can break on the trucks. My biggest worry is a propshaft breaking then beating the holy hell out of the underside of the truck.

Thanks for the input guys. I will try it out next time. Do you shift the trans manually or just drop it in drive? If shifting a la manual was RPM is good for the 1-2, 2-3 shift? I'm sure it is listed somewhere on here.

suprised knowone has said this:

if you can't build more than 5 psi and its not your brakes that are limiting you, then your stock WG could be sticky and not allowing you to build enough boost. So if the given techniques don't work, then i'd bet money your WG isn't operating properly. Its a common problem.

It is not that I can't get more than 5 PSI, that is just what I have tried so far. I am just learning the Ty launch techniques. I will try the N brake boost soon and let you all know what I can really launch at. Still looking to see if everyone leaves these in drive or if it is better to shift manually(@ ? RPM).

Drive is fine. Especially if you have a V9 chip as it allows for a few more revs automatically. Manually shifting shouldn't be attempted until you are more comfortable with the launch as the rewards aren't worth the risk in this stage of your learning. Drive will get you a little more line pressure and will do just fine for what you're looking to do IMO.

Feel free to correct me fellas if you think I'm wrong here.

Blow Me?
And I thought being in Drive lowered your line pressure?

When you guys are building boost are you flooring it or using the minimum throttle you can get away with to build boost? I've only done two boost launches and I floored it to build boost (thought that would be faster) but noticed that I couldn't keep the truck from creeping once the boost got over 5lbs (I'm only getting 8lbs right now). And that's with putting the truck in neutral and reving it first to get the brake pedal to sink.

Like I mentioned that is a brake issue...some can floor it and only get 4-5lbs, likely because WG is not up to par.

Well, I tried it and I can get to just about 10 PSI. It launched a lot harder than the 5 PSI launch. It seemed a little violent (hard on the truck) to me. This is my first turbo vechicle and I need to get adjusted to the way these things work. I will probally reserve that launch technique for the strip. I need to keep this as my driver for a while. I can understand why things break on these trucks. Don't get me wrong it felt great but, I need to keep it on the road. I am very curious to see what she'll do at the track.

Ahh yes... Violent. Welcome to owning an AWD turbo.
