93 Ty 1485 is legally dead

So just under two weeks ago, which happened to be just under two weeks since I took delivery of my Ty, I ended up rear ending a Volvo that stopped dead in the left lane of Rt 84 in Hartford, CT. The estimate from the body shop is $10,171 to fix it, so its going to be totalled. This might not be too bad for me, since now I get the chance to put it back together my way. Here's the carnage:

Hell yeah, everything looks like it's fixable.

Even if you had to swap a frame, you're able to get all new fenders, hood, grille, etc. The cladding looks fixable too.

Expect a post from Smaug. :rotf:

I imagine the Volvo didn't look all that bad?? Those damn things are tanks.

Don't let them total that. That is ridiculous, hell I have seen worse.

How many miles? Let me know if they let you buy it back, and you don't want it.

Sorry I wasn't clear before guys. I do intend to buy it back if its reasonable. I'm still waiting on the numbers for the payout and how much I can buy it back for. She just crossed over 92k earlier in the day before the accident. Smaug lives two towns over from me and has already offered some help in the rebuild once I get it back. Mostly it is sheet metal damage. I think the frame is ok, since the bumper brackets busted off their welds during the initial impact. As you can see from the green liquid on the ground, the radiator is gone, and I think the lower intercooler is also probably dead. Other than that, not too much important is damaged. I plan on keeping this truck for a long damn time once I piece it back together, so I really don't care if it gets a salvage title.

flatout, that is NOTHING.. as for $10k in damages.. thats one insane body shop..

Ill fix it for $2000, just gotta find someone to get it painted.. :D

yes, I have all the parts, yes you are local.. any chance you have a big garage?

hell, most of that damage could probably be banged out.. I also have a aluminum radiator your could use.. just gotta get a external tranny cooler..

seriously, whatever it costs to buy it back, even if its above what you can afford, let me know. I'd gladly buy it, fix it, and rent it to your for a low low weekly rate..

there is NO WAY that should be totalled.. god damn... im shocked.

Yeah, this body shop is full of it. I've gone through their 6 page estimate multiple times. They are charging over $200 for a radiator core support that sells for $100 from LMC truck. They are including costs for removing and reinstalling my door handles, lock cylinders, and power mirrors. Why you need to do this when there is no damage to the doors, I don't know. They even tacked on charges to top off the tranny fluid and slapped $15 on to wash it before delivery. There is a ton of BS charges like that. I think they want the wreck for themselves and the insurance company doesn't feel like fixing an 11 year old truck. Screw 'em all. I am going to be everything I can to get this ride back on the road.

As far as the size of my garage... its pretty small. Unless of course I can talk the guy who lives in the apartment below me to take his Caddy out of his half of the two car garage we share, then we're in business. Eric, expect a PM when I do finally get this thing back. By the way, anyone in the Northern NJ area happen to have a trailer or flatbed I could use for a little while one of these days? Its about 10 miles from the body shop to my apartment complex, and I definately don't want to drive it.

No rear damage, no damage to the doors. Like I mentioned up a little bit before, they tacked on a lot of stuff that's all BS, and it seems like the insurance company would rather total the thing than ever bother to consider fixing it. I tipped my hand once early on and told the insurance agent that the KBB value on the truck was around $11k, and then mysteriously the total repair bill is just shy of $11k? I don't think there's enough people involved for it to officially qualify as a conspiracy, but I definately think there is some backroom dealing going on.

Actually, I forgot my favorite budget item: $543.56 to replace and paint the hood, plus 1 hour of labor ($42+$1.50 supplies) to install and 5 hours of painting (5*$42 + 5*$21 supplies=$315). So the total for the hood alone is quoted at $901.86!!!!! A brand new cowl hood painted to match would be a hell of a lot less! Anyway, once I hopefully buy the wreck, I can fix the thing right, and I sure as hell won't rip myself off. Thanks for all of the support guys.

Its probably a $4-5K repair bill. One of the local Ty owner got into an similar accident and he said later after he went through the hassle of find replacement part, that the body said they could have had it totalled because replacement parts weren't available.

One thing to look into, think about & ponder. Salvage Title, is the vehicel going to get one? (it may not, in MA after 8 or 10 years vehicle don't get them) Salvage titled cars need to be reinspected and the inspector/inspection might be a hassle. Look into if you need receipts for replacement parts. Also keep plenty of pictures to document the damage, even if doesn't recieve a salvage/repaired title. The accident picture you have will help resale value, many people assume the worse when it comes to a salvage vehicle (or the seller down plays the damage), your documentation will help you.

word of caution....id be careful how long you let sits there idle...im sure its accumilating storage as we speak...and IF something IS up with the shop...even tho it needs 10k in repairs(BS), im sure it wont take long for the storage bill to exceed the value of the truck & the bodyshop will win the title/truck (altho laws differ state to state)....that would take AWHILE,but if it turns into a pissing contest.....
in Ma.some places can get up to $110/day

EDIT:i tend to be parinoid,i lost a vehicle like that

if it were me,id take this as a bad sign and pay whatever bill they have(towing,storage,ect..) and get it out of there and to a reputable shop,or to YOUR garage till the adjuster gets out to look at it...most times a shop can be very helpful in getting top dollar for the repair, but these guys are STARTING at top dollar...usually,you write a reasonable est. and when the truck is apart,THEN you hit the ins.co. with a bunch of suppliments and work your way up...i dont know what these guys are doing...

Don't taze me bro!
Take it somewhere else. That's insurance fraud. I would get three other quotes and report the first shop to your company for attempted insurance fraud. With three other quotes at half the amount they'll go after them and they'll get what they deserve. Places like that piss me off because it causes all of our premiums to go up.

I'm trying to do everything in my power to help..

I could probably get a truck to trailer that baby outa there tonight, if need be.. just need a trailer or dolly (Uhaul?) I got a price from my old boss on using the flatbed.. not to bad..

eitherway, get that outa there asap. Storage fees and just a shitty body shop in general are going to make this situation 100 times worse..

I know the shop he has the truck at.. it has big and flashy lights, gets a ton of business that way, but does REALLY shitty work.. nothing but overspray, misaligned panels.. its a nightmare..

tim, seriously I'll do anything I can to help you get that truck outa there and into your garage, or at least to another shop.

I can tell you that different insurance companies total at a percentage of the value of the truck. If you are that close they will total it for sure. Most of if you are at 80 - 90% value.
As far as the body shop quote goes it is about what it should be. Every state has different laws on what they can replace with aftermarket, used and what has to be new. They have a database that tells how much money and time for each part. Paying full retail for actual GM parts, which noone does, really raises the bill. Its also easy to raise the bill when you charge $75 and up a hour for paint work.
I actually worked for a place that went over body shop quotes for a number of different insurance companies. Biggest scam was time spent removing and installing parts. Lots of places would try to put down the time for every little part when lots were included with the removal of a large item.
From the photos I would agree with everyone and say it should be a easy job to fix. Just a pain finding a good place to do the final painting. Good luck on the truck.
