Re: '96 4.3 vortec build

Is there a performance Harmonic balancer that will replace the stock '96 damper? I want a more durable piece because my ProCharger centrifugal is driven from the pulley mounted to the balancer so a nice steel unit sounds good. This has the reluctor ring for the crank sensor pickup and I have googled and searched several forums but not much info out there about it..

Good times!

So I have come to grips with going 4 bolt just to have it as we all know what happens. So 2 splayed billet steel sbc 350 4 bolt aftermarket mains are what I need for the inboard mains? And a Howards billet front cap? Strap on the rear cap?

I think there is something different about the SBC 350 mains that won't transfer to the 262. There's a step or something. Worth double checking...

I don't believe the balancer is any different for the balance shaft motors than non balance shaft motors. It's mounted outside of the timing cover, so its not affect by the spacing of the balance shaft gears / reluctor ring.

Re: '96 4.3 vortec build

I'm pretty sure the crank pushes up against the reluctor ring which uses the same crankshaft woodruff key for indexing as the balancer/damper, through the seal in the timing cover-the crank goes into the timing cover and is sealed by the front crank seal in the timing cover-in protrudes into the timing cover around 1"+/- as most all engine balancer/dampers do. The reluctor ring is like .125 +/-. I agree that the balance shaft and non balance shaft are same balancer, however the reluctor wheel of the OBD2 motors poses an issue that might miss-align the serp belt pulley that would be thrown off by the added depth of the reluctor ring- Hoping someone here might have built one of these '96 up OBD2 motors with info.

Re: '96 4.3 vortec build

I know what your saying but GM spaced the crank so the timing gear, reluctor ring, balancer and crank pulley align properly so the serpentine belt alignment didn't change for either motor. I do have 03 vortec motor in my Syclone that stripped down to the short block pulled the cam and reassembled.

Looking through my old pictures, it looks the reluctor ring is recessed a little.

Thanks for the pic Dave! After looking at part numbers, looks like there is a different #'s every time there was any change. Doorman, Powerbond, and ACDelco all have oem type replacements.

I have bigger valves 2.00/1.56 and fully ported Vortecs.

Hey Dave, I'm sticking with the 1.94 but what valve did you use to get the 1.56? I was figuring on buying new valves for the rebuild, at least exhaust valves-was wondering about going up to 1.60? Thanks.

Good times!

I didn't build the heads but it has Ferrea valves. Looking at Ferrea website, I suspect it's part number F6161.

Re: '96 4.3 vortec build

I found these 1.55 exhaust valves that have the right length and tips for self aligning vortec heads .
Alex's parts has been around for a long time and has very good reviews.
He is a machinist and will deal directly with you-not a sales rep! That is worth a lot of old school points there. https://www.alexsparts.com/stainles...eight-for-50-00-lt4-vortec-fast-burn-on-sale/ I'm going to try them.
Edit: I have to go with a known manufacturer-I choose Ferrea- ; 1.94 F6299, 1.60 F6305

Well ended up w/Milodon 45600 1.94 intake and Milodon 45045 1.60 for exhaust. Getting closer to breaking her open! I have to make a detour through LA and rebuild the 4spd transaxle in my daughters '83 Vanagon =) and my annual visit with my daughter-for a record 18 days! LOL September 13 I will be in St Petersburg starting on the 4.3!! I have 7 weeks work to finish up here in CR in the next 5 weeks!

Good times!
