AC or not

Re: AC or not

I would consider mine "fast", once I get all the bugs sorted out. I still have A/C, though I think you will find most at this level don't. :)

took the A/C off mine..i think its fast, but the main reason to axe the AC is for the space and weight

Re: AC or not

Many of us have decided that the a/c is NOT worth having over the bloody knuckles and cuzz words that come out our mouths while working around it. Its a known favorite as far as deletes go. Not only do you save space, you save weight and you take load off of the pullys. Its a good one. BUT consider if you are one of the few in a warmer climate (i live in LA, dont have an issue without a/c but some do) and take longer than normal drives, i recommend keeping it for the luxury.. hth

That's a BIG 10-4! It's SO much easier working on a truck on the passenger side with it gone. I wish that I would have removed mine *before* I went to a larger turbo. Made things A LOT harder than they needed to be with it in the way. I wanted to keep mine in the worse way but my bud talked me out it. Liked the idea of having a quick truck that I didn't "strip down" to make it happen. The way that he put it was it "more important to me to be able to easily work and maintain the truck or brag to folks that I run (insert best E.T. here) with AC still in the truck?" Putting the hurt on the V8 cars at the track with my little 4.3 V6 pick-em truck gets me recoginition AC or not so out it came

! Of course I saved everything in the event that I ever get crazier and WANT to go back to stock.

You can see the weight of some of the AC components in this thread here so you can see how much weight that you can "lose".

I *think* member CKEITH may still have some floating around. I have two myself but, they are in need of some TLC since they are junkyard finds. Swapping out the boxes is a piece of cake. The first thing that you have to do is remove the blower resistor and enlarge the hole in the NON AC box so that it will fit. You will reuse the blower resistor from your AC box so don't throw it in the trash just yet
icon_lol.gif
. You can see the "diamond" that I cut out with my Dremel to fit it in there (original hole is retangular shaped). Made a template so that I wouldn't have to cut any more material than *absolutely* necessary to make it fit. Because it you make the hole too big, the resisitor won't completely cover it:

IMG_1651.sized.jpg

Then you have to mount the blower relay somewhere. I chose to mount it between the blower motor and blower resistor to keep it any from the heat of the downpipe and for easy access. You will need to lengthen the wires that go to the resistor also unless you opt to mount it someplace closer towards the engine. The stock wiring harness won't be long enough to reach it in the location that it was originally. Cut the plug off and soldered/heat shrunk the wires to make it reach on my truck. If you mount it closer to the engine, you will have to cover the existing hole with a plate of some sort.

The blower motor in the AC box and NON AC box is NOT the same blower motor BTW. If you get a NON AC box without a blower motor, you won't be able to use the one out of your AC box because it won't fit. The AC box is deeper than the NON AC one, so the "squirrel cage" is longer/deeper on an AC blower motor than it is on a NON AC one. HTH's

Re: AC or not

No A/C here. But that's mostly because my compressor went out and i dont use a/c anyways. Here it gets hot but I hate a/c and just crack the windows. Its cold as b@lls right now though and if i was driving it i would wished that I'd left the heater. I took out everything and cut and painted some metal to be flush to the firewall where the blower box and all the plastic crap was. a LOT cleaner.

Re: AC or not

Even though it does make the truck a lot harder to work on, I have kept A/C in mine and plan to keep it for the forseeable future. I think "deleting" the A/C on a Syclone/Typhoon is a big mistake and "hacks" the truck up, unless you are building a race truck then you kind of have to hack it up.....

Now I know there are plenty of guys here who don't plan to ever sell their trucks, and they can do what they want. You can even make it look factory with the GM non-A/C panels etc.. But I know if I were buying a truck, I would definitely pay a premium for one that is 100% complete rather than one that is missing a handful of parts.

I'll tell ya what, it brings me great satisfaction when I compare my truck to the local hot-rods (many of them relatively unstreetable) and there's a handful I can outdo with a little V6....... WITH full accessories in full street trim!! And I love to crank that A/C for a refreshing ride home after some of those blazing hot days at the track or car shows.. :2cents:

Re: AC or not

After everything I've done to my truck, I really, really wish I would have kept the A/C. I had never planned on living somewhere hot again though so I didn't think it would be an issue.

I never get tired of fresh air and the sound of the turbo spooling so when it's nice out my windows are down anyways .... I never used the ac anyways and it was more in the way then anything

Re: AC or not

As mentioned in my previous post, the AC blower motor won't work with the NON AC cover because it is deeper/longer than the NON AC blower. Was out in the garage this evening and decided to take the liberty to document the difference:

IMG_1876.sized.jpg

"AC vs. NON AC blower motor comparison. AC fan is 3.5625" deep and NON AC is 2.750" deep."

As you can see, there is a .8125" or 13/16 of an inch difference between the two squirrel cages. Also, the fan on the AC motor is pressed onto the shaft whereas the NON AC one has a nut holding it on.

This is off topic but the truth is a truck that has been modified in ANY way isn't going to get a second look from a hardcore collector/buyer. It doesn't matter if the truck has the top end of the engine polished or if it has ALL the accessories and runs 11's with a non stock turbo
icon_wink.gif
. Because it is not 100% original the way that it came from the factory. You can always go back to stock provided that you don't get rid of the parts. That's why I have saved ALL my parts that I have removed from my truck

DITTO, I used my AC exactly zero times in the last three years so it was an easy decision to remove it.

Re: AC or not

nope!!! ac all the way for me!!!

i want to go on the power tour, among other things, i have no problem with the a/c being in the way, but then agian, i started with v8 s-10's so this is a cakewalk.

my plan is to run mid to low 11's this summer, with just a vortec longblock, and a 422 cam. WITH a/c

Re: AC or not

I plan on keeping mine, and will until I run into a point to where I can't anymore. My et goal is low 10's.

To me a "street" car/truck is not a true street car/truck if it has no AC, a cage(granted, some need it but I won't put on in it.) and full interior.

In many older street cars ac was an option... so I never looked at it that way.. but a cage or gutted interior is def not a street car in my opinion

Re: AC or not

Yeah true about the older cars. But sense the AC is usually standard equipment now adays, I consider it. Or to put it this way, if the car/truck had it before you/someone else took it off its not a street car.

Is a syty still one if its v8 and rwd? Heh
