Adding Overhead Console

Ok, i have a 92 Ty and have just bought an overhead console out of a 94 blazer, which is the same one that came on the 93 Ty's. I want to kow if anybody has done this and if so was it just a bolt in or was there some real work involved to get it to mount right?

My plan is to use the front space that has nothing and in the later years it had the comp and temp display in it, andyways to use that space for the readout of my PLX M300 wideband O2. Im thinking it should be a direct bolt in but any advice you al can give me would be great.

Thanks

Re: Adding Overhead Console

I'm not sure...I saw one at a junkyard the other day that I thought about snagging; it appeared to have a couple bolts at the front and at the rear. They probably go into the "straps" that run across the roof between the headliner and the roof skin. If I get around to it, I'll take a look next time I'm there to see what it really takes for the removal and install.

Re: Adding Overhead Console

Cool thanks for the info, the one i bought should be here any day now, im thinking it is probably held on in the rear by the dome light assembly on the studs off the roof and the little slid on clips and probably some sheet metal screws on the front, im thinking it should be pretty easy to install, ill post pics once i get it in.

Re: Adding Overhead Console

i have a 94 blazer and i've removed the overhead console before...

theres a small hole in the head liner just above the rearview mirror. im going off of memory here but i remember there being a thin piece of metal with a little clip on it (like the ones under the dash) thats where the front screw goes into... in the back where the rear dome light is , theres another hole in the headliner with a bracket type thing that looks like its being held on with some kind of epoxy? i dont remember 100%. on that bracket there are more of those clips that the screws go into to hold the console in place tightly. remove the plastic cover from the rear dome light and theres two holes for the screws... i dunno how difficult this is gonna be without anything to go off of... but if i get home from work before its dark i can try and remove the console to take some pictures for you...

as for wiring all this shit up... hehe youre on your own there!

HTH

I just got one of the short consoles off ebay for $20 from a 98 blazer. Its got the 2 maps lights, homelink, compass and outside temp w/sensor harness. I did need the long one from the 94 blazer... i had my blazer for almost 10 years and never used those compartments up there.. my garage door opener did fit in there right, my sunglasses didnt fit in there, and i used the bigger one for napkins hahaha... so... i just figured i didnt need it.

also you might run into some problems with that overhead console... cause i think the headlight is shaped differently on the 93s than the 92s... the 93s have like a hump or something in the middle...

anyone with a 93 wanna chime in if this is correct?

Re: Adding Overhead Console

Well thanks for the info, im sure i can figure someting out, Im also pretty sure all the 1st gen blazers and jimmys and typhoons all had the same roof, as none of them ever had a factory installed sunroof option, not until the 2nd gen 95+. Those overhead consoles do take some work to get them to go in and look right, becauuse you have to trim the base plate on the console to follow the contour of the roof. A buddy put one from a 98 into his 89 blazer and i believe he used liquid nails to glue some blocks of wood to the roof to mount the screws into. cant see it onces it mounted, and looks factory.

Thanks again for the info, hopefully mine will be here next week and i can get it installed pretty easy.

Hey Mike how did this project end up going for you, got any pics??

Well no after i got my console in the mail i realized it was for a 4 door, and that wont fit right, and i havent been able to find a good condition 2 door one yet, but here lately i have been concentrating on getting my engine fixed, but i will be back on this project in the near future.

So am I correct in all my searching that even the smallest consoles are too big to put in a sy without modification??

the JIMMY already has an overhead console

even has a B&M electronic shift "improver" installed where the compass would go. There is no compass/temp display on it.

Overhead Console How-To

See if that helps.

Thanx for the info Justin. I didn't know that they came that small. I'm not sure how I want to go about this yet, I didn't want it for the compass and temp, just for a spot for extra gauges. Since the headliner fell down I figured this was as good a time as any to attempt this. I'll have to keep diggin I think I want one that is longer, one that goes from the windshield to the back window, I might be SOL unless I build it.
