Another No Start Thread

So my Sy, #1096 was running fine when I took it to the last car meet, but the battery (new Duralast Gold) drained from sitting over 4 weeks so I placed it on my trickle charger and now refuses to start. The fuel pump primes, it cranks, has spark but will not turn over. ECM A/B fuses are good, replaced the ICM with a new AC Delco as I wasn't getting any tach jump when attempting to crank but that didn't resolve the issue. The "Check Engine" light is on when attempting to crank and "Check Guages" illuminates as well. The truck has Code 59/Ostrich combo which came with the truck when I bought it last year but I don't have the capability to check it. Was going to Turbotweak/Scanmaster this winter.

If I left out any pertinent information, please advise but I am at my wits end.

Re: Another No Start Thread

Are saying it litteraly won't turn over? As in the starter doesn't engage? You say it cranks but will not turn over. Those two cancel each other. One or the other, can't be both.

Sorry, frustration took out my capability to type coherently. Starter engages but I am not getting the motor to fire.

duralasts batteries suck I've had the worst experience with them.

You know, I am wondering if this might not also be my issue. I may try to jump it tomorrow with my daily and see if that makes a difference to eliminate the battery as an issue.

Yeah def try that if not pull it and have it checked. Maybe the battery is to dead or dead cells too even have enough juice to get it to kick over.I had a gold top in mine an it died in only a few months it wasn't even 6 mos old. The red top duralasts those are complete garbage from day 1. I've never used a red top in the Ty but did on my fiero the auto zone people probably hated me.

No prob. If the motor cranks at normal speed you can probably rule out the bat but you can jump it to be sure. You could try a little gas or starting fluid in the IC inlet. Be careful and have a fire extinguisher close. If it fires you'll know it's fuel. You replaced the ECM because the tach didn't jump. Does it jump now? Probably does as you say you have spark but check to be sure. Since you haven't done anything to the motor it kinda narrows it down to fuel. Hard to reach but open the injector connector (back of intake right hand side). Check that the pink/black wire has 12 volts with the key on. If you can reach an injector easier the pink/black works there as well.

And just because the pump runs doesn't necessarily mean you have fuel pressure. Can you check that?

It will run IF it has compression, correct amount of fuel, and spark at the right time. It will be one of the three.

What kind of battery is in your truck? I think that all batteries have taken a dive in quality lately....not just duralast....everstart...costco...optima....alot of the batteries are made by the same people just with different specs in the build..maybe it's the material...possibly from china...just a thought.

Could be the rubber hose in the tank for the pump possibly? Pump may be running but may not be getting pressure if that hose has a slit in it or detoriated. My old crispy GN done this before.

I think it's a superstart from orielly I can't remember for sure though.

Re: Another No Start Thread

Sounds very similar to my problem I've had. Some good things to check in that thread if you like. I still haven't figured my issue out as mine runs great if started with ether so might want to give that a try. Here is a link to things others have suggested for me to look into . http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=100403
Hope something in there can help you.

Thanks, I replaced the ICM and the tach still doesn't jump when attempting to fire. I can check fuel pressure, have a gauge with sender at the rail but fixed some wiring the previous owner did and one of those things was pull the RJ45 (one pair used of the group mind you) that was used to connect the sender to the gauge. I can run that quickly though to confirm pressure at the rail tonight as well as attempt to jump it to eliminate the new Duralast battery I put in. No motor or electrical work was done between the last time it ran. Lots of good info here and I sincerely appreciate it!

I had this same non sense going on in my 93 Ty. I ended up putting in a new distributor. That took care of the problem.

Re: Another No Start Thread

As an update I actually don't have spark and spent the day testing various ignition components. Following MSD's troubleshooting page my MSD 6A box is fine, coil should be fine, but it would appear either my ignition pickup or distributor is the culprit. The white wire from the ICM out test fine as well. Good times. So, tomorrow I am ordering a new ignition pickup, another new ICM, cap, rotor, and wires.

Re: Another No Start Thread

FYI I'm the new owner of #1096 and it ended up being the distributor... I used several threads to reach that conclusion and figured this could help somebody else in the future.
