Another Turbo ???

I have searched and searched so before you say "SEARCH" note that I have. I am doing a build right now: Forged bottom end, 4 bolts, SRP's, custom comp cam, vortecs, etc....Now, for the good stuff, it's turbo time!!! I am interested in a dual ball bearing turbo because of the quicker spool up. I'm interested in the GT35 from detroit turbo, but their website really doesn't have a lot of info on it, can anyone point me in the best direction with choosing one?

I'm not familiar with the lingo either ie: S cover, E cover, PT4431re, 20G etc. So if someone could shed some light on that it would be greatly appreciated.

I do plan on running a stall converter, but I'm not sure on the size as of yet, I plan on having the engine dynoed before I determine the size of the stall.

Thanks for the help,
Dewey

Re: Another Turbo ???

I believe the diffrence in s vs e cover is 4" vs 3" inlet. Your best bet is to call Scott at detriot or E at turbotime and tell him about your setup. Things like a/c and what not. Remember that to run any of those turbo's you would need an aftermarket downpipe as opposed to a 20g whic is just an upgrade from the stock turbo.

Re: Another Turbo ???

yeh, I can go with what ever DP I need I have a pipe bender available and can fab my own. I may just call the vendors and see what they suggest. Thanks for the info...keep it coming...I like to be informed when spending $1500-2000 of my hard earned greenbacks hehehe

You need more than a pipe bender for a downpipe on the GT35R and PTE turbo's. The wastegate puck is in the downpipe.

Re: Another Turbo ???

If you've got access to a bender, a welder, and you've worked with exhuast pipe before there is no reason that you can't build your own downpipe.. The wasegate does not need to be integral and incorporated into the downpipe. The pipeing and flange can be designed such that you can run an external gate.. Or, if you want you can fab it up similar to how PTE did it and have it integral.. Spencer and I did it.. Its not that hard..

Hi Dewey,

I would be more than happy to help explain the lingo :D

Please send me an email with some information on your setup, max rpm/rpm range your going to run, HP goals, some flow numbers on the heads if you have it, cam specs, using headers or stock manifolds, keeping A/C?, intercooler setup, alky, prefer integral or external WG, etc, etc. Also, how much boost, 15psi... 30psi?

I did get your voicemail, and I'll give you a chance to email me this info and then we can go from there. Sound ok? If you can't reach me on the phone, email is the best way to communicate with me, as I'm not always able to catch up with the board or PM's.

thanks,

Re: Another Turbo ???

you can always mount an external wastegate similar to this when fabbing it up yourself.

Re: Another Turbo ???

I have GT35-R and love it (got it from detriot turbo)and still using a stock stall i talked to PTE they still have a few in Back (dp) the only other thing is the oil ret line being that its a DBBT its got a smaller shaft section so you need a special part (witch PTE forgot to include) but that dont matter much because it wont work yo would still need to call E-RUE at turbotime and get him to make you one and you will need to cut your ac bracket about an inch or so to fit that big ass hairdryer of a turbo but worth all the bs look at my build pics you can see

nice truck, I like the turbo set up. why did you have to cut the A/C bracket. (what was hitting?)

Re: Another Turbo ???

I don't know, but I'm waiting for Scott @ Detroit turbo to email me back some info, when he does I'll be sure to post it.

Re: Another Turbo ???

The GT3582R will easily support your 400-500hp goal. You may find that a PT6776R would be better suited to your build if your looking to run over 24psi as your starting to run out of efficiency on the 35.

I think you could go for either one, and if you think your not going to be happy with 400-500hp, then I'd consider the 67 so you have more room down the road.

What size mm is a GT35?

82mm compressor exducer, 61mm compressor inducer

Re: Another Turbo ???

Scott, I am going to need a different downpipe with that correct? what else would I need converting from stock to the 67?

This setup will require a new downpipe. If you are interested in making your own I have 3" stainless steel .065 for it, plus whatever factory bends that you can't make with the bender. I can also supply you with a flange for the exhaust housing that you can use to go with either an integral or external WG.

I'd suggest going to SS braided lines for the water and oil. You'll need an actuator if you want an integral WG or a good external WG such as the TiAL 38mm.

You will need to go with the E cover , 3" inlet / 2" outlet if you want to keep A/C. You will also need a new turbo-IC pipe as the turbo sits higher than the stocker.

You'll want a new boost controller unless your planning to do your own custom tune and wish to use the factory boost solenoid to control boost. There are many to choose from and I can help you out but it basically comes down to how many features you want because you can get something as cheap as $50. Some electronic controllers can range up to $1000.

You will also need to consider the inlet for the turbo. I sell cobra head 90* elbows that many customers use, but again it all depends on your budget. If you haven't already done so, plan on moving your battery. I can explain some options there as well.

Let me know if I can help.

thanks,
