Any need to upgrade to a 3K stall w/stock turbo?

As it reads above I want to know if there is a benefit to upgrading to a larger than stock stall with a stock turbo truck. I need to rebuild the trans so I can do it while it's out. This will remain my DD for another year or so reliability is more important. I drive 60 miles daily back and forth to work. I plan to upgrade to a bar MAP and chip in the spring. I also have plans to upgrade the FP and add a AFPR. So it is stock for now. I may eventually go with a bigger turbo. Any noticable gains over a stocker? Which would be a better stall for a stock turbo? As always TIA.

IMO, 3000 stall cuts into the power band too much, considering stock parts. I am running a 9/11 2600 on a 20g stocker with the tiny stock exhaust housing. The take off from idling to stomping it at a light is much better. You may loose ~2 mpg, and you will have slightly more trans temp.If you go with a 2600, and later go nuts on building the engine, and large turbo, you will need more stall. The 2600 would be easy to re-sale!

Why would you loose any MPG since we have locking converters?

I was told on a stock turbo w/ a 2800 to a 3000 stall is perfect, it lets you build lots of boost without creeping forward.

I can not afford to lose 2 MPG since I'm running 300 miles to work and alone each week.

Ive heard a 2800 stall is a good all around unit for a stock to midly modified truck. and with the lock up converter it shouldnt hurt the milage as long as you can keep your foot out of it.

You have to use more rpm to get the truck to move from a standstill during DD. Those extra rpms help spool the turbo, but that's where the mileage decrease comes in. Most guys looking for performance don't really care about that. I wouldn't go over 2800 rpm. The streetability starts going down after that. Everyone's setup is different so a 2800 stall in one might be too tight in another. Just depends on what you want and what your truck needs. Daily driver, keep it 2600 to 2800 rpm. More street/strip 3000/3200. If you've changed cams and put on a big turbo, use what the cam manufacturer / turbo manufacturer recommends :2cents:

So there would be little to no change for highway driving?

Once the converter is locked and kept in the locked position there would be no difference. Everytime you let off the throttle or hit the brake, the converter unlocks. Converter doesn't lock until steady speeds of over 37 MPH IIRC so that's the area where mileage is affected. Unfortunately, that's were the around town speed is.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I will just stay with the stocker for a while until she is retired form daily duties. I will check on some prices for a 2600-2800 stall so when I'm ready for it I'll have it on my list. Any specific recomendations on where to start my search?

I have a 28-2900 stall with the stock turbo (not stock anymore) and I no longer need to boost launch, because when I stomp on it, the rpms flash and will break the tires loose "but" it doesn't seem pull as hard from a 60 roll like the stock TC did (slight delay) but it could be a TV cable adjustment issue.
