The aluminum plate they're mounted on? That's part of the KB cold air intake kit. The kit has you pulling air from the fenderwell, and the aluminum block off plate is to keep warm engine bay air out of the fenderwell. I don't use the KB cold air intake, just left the block off plate there as it makes a nice place to mount my terminals and my wastegate solenoid.

I didn't like the ATR battery kit either so I had a buddy of mine fab up a similar setup but one that only bolts to the frame (instead of the frame and the fender) and has a substantial hold down per NHRA requirements. It also has a door built into the wheel well held in w/ 4 zeus fittings providing access to the battery w/o even removing the wheel & tire. The only time you need to remove the wheel & tire is to actually take the batter out. If you are interested in one or want pictures let me know.

Here is the pic. The hose is on the left side of the picture. It's firm and hard to bend and in the way of the battery. Makes for a pain to move the battery in and out.

Will an optima fit in the stock location? It was a pain to get my battery out this past weekend, I had to twist and turn to get it around the stiff coolant line that goes from the a/c (i think?) I dunno if I can squeeze a different battery in there. Anybody know?

My engine bay is stock too, and the Optima fits fine. That coolant line is just as annoying with an Optima as it is with a standard battery. Actually, since the Optima is a little thinner in the middle section, I found it easier to slip in there. I'm pretty sure I was parked next to you at Jimmy's BBQ, we should have talked about it there. Here's my engine bay:

I have the same thing. But I went ahead lastnight and took off the plates. I'm up and down on how it looks without them though. Seems like there is something missing. At least when my plate was there it looked clean. But without them it might let more air in :dunno: (mine are painted black btw.)

The Kenne Bell relocation kit was one of the BEST mods I've done to my truck. The whole purpose of doing this is to free up much needed room at the right-front area of the engine compartment. The other benefit is moving some weight to the rear of the truck and out of sight. I've had my KB setup for a few years now, and never had any issues. Running that positive cable from the front to under the bed is what made me the most nervous. I made sure to route that cable away from the exhaust components and wrap it with thermotec just in-case. I also sleeved the cable with silicon hose where it made contact with any metal to prevent abrasion. Zip ties keep everything in place.

I can hook the charger up to the battery without grounding anything out...that's never been a problem. Just have to do things slowly and cautiously. Removing the battery, though, IS a major PITA, and takes a good hour at best. It can be done without removing the RR wheel if you have a smaller battery like the RedTop, which I do. One thing that does make me nervous is the possibility of the battery shorting to the body in the event of an accident, however unlikely that is.

I have a fire extinguisher in the truck, but if the battery shorts, I need a quick way to undo the connections, which I don't at present. Is there a simple "quick-release" type of connector or HD switch that can be used on the positive battery cable in case the system shorts and needs to be quickly disconnected?

I don't know the exact specs but Optima now makes a group 51 and 51R that they squeeze between the firewall and strut tower on Civics and Integras. Those would probably fit nicely somewhere tucked away. If I they would have carried them on base I'd have one for my relocate plans but they only carried the 75series ($90.00 so that was cool).

Your cleanest bet is going to be to relocate the battery in the rear fender well, preferably the pass. side for better weight distribution. Now as for being able to get a jump, that the easy part, GM and Chrysler put alot of battery's in the front fenders of vehicals during the late 90's, what they did to solve the jump starting problem was to put a small covered post in the engine bay directly connected to the positive battery cable. You pop the hood and hook up like normal. As for the battery grounding if you got in a wreck and starting on fire, come on, the chance of that happening are slim to none. If it did happen the it's resonable to say if you got hit in the front end it could happen.

I put my battery right where the spare tire goes. Made a couple brackets.Pretty simple. So it put more weight farther back. Better traction. I seem to always spin the rear tires too much when I watched vidieos of my Sy launching.Looks pretty clean, easy to get to. It's hard to get to a battery in front of the rear wheel, & worst is the ATR one in the front right side. :2cents:

I put mine where the spare tires goes as well. It fuse with a circuit breaker and the battery cutoff switch. The only thing I would change (and plan on doing this winter) is the location of through bolts, I will put them on the side because the are a little close to the battery terminals. (I have the positive bolt wrapper with electrical tape and a rubber coating, to prevent a shorts)

I'll have to post a pic later tonight. My battery is attached to the very rear of the truck & you cannot see the battery from the back of the car.. only the cut off switch. :tup:

I'm working on building my own battery relocate on the Sy. To anyone that has done this in their trucks, if I relocate to the rear pass fenderwell do I have to run the negative cable all the way back to the block or can I just ground it on the frame?

If you can ground on the frame do you still have to ground the engine block to the frame or is that just for the battery?

My possitive cable do I still have to run all the smaller gauge wires to the other leads, mine has three wires coming out of the poss. side 1 to the starter, 1 to the block on the firewall, and 1 that plugs into a wiring harness under he battery? Does everyone reconnect these?

I'm using an Optima and 00 gauge wire I got at the welding supply store, yah its overkill but thats just the way I do things. I mean its only money you can't take it with you! Any help would be great!!

Guys, don't forget about the battery under the stock battery tray mod... You put it where the stock vacuum ball goes. I made a home brew mount for mine. Nolan wrote a guide with photos on how to do it much better, using a GM battery tray, and a full capacity, compact ACDelco battery. It's probably the easiest battery relocation there is (its still a fair amount of work).

I installed a thin 51 series battery down in the space below the original battery plate (removed). Only the thin 51 series will fit down there. Seems to work fine, I may have a pic laying around. I did the same things U R doing - Cobra elbow, K&N, etc. Now I need to figure out how to get a Cold Air duct hooked up into that location.

Nolan's guide used an ACDelco 70DT-6YR. The DT indicates top and side (Dual Terminals), I got one with just side terminals for a little extra upper air filter clearance. I want to say mine was called 70-6YR. It just fits in there. The best part is, it's a full battery so I don't have to worry when I work under the hood for hours with the underhood lamp on.
