Anyone ever hypermiled a Sy/Ty?

Re: Anyone ever hypermiled a Sy/Ty?

First I started laugh at loud while reading this thread at lunch.

I noticed that my mpg goes down at higher highway speeds as well. I tried tried getting better gas mileage but I found that it really only netted me 2mpg. Screw that I would rather have fun. If I drive 65ish with a light foot I can get 19-20 mpg.

The these trucks seem to have a lot rolling/wind resistance. I briefly looked into hyper milling a few years ago one of my DD (it got old with me after about 3 tankfulls). When I was looking at I found someone with an Awd Bravada, they mentioned that because the truck decelerate so poorly that coasting didn't really help out so well. They found driving with load worked better for mpg.

It has become a personal competition to see how much better MPG I can get by trying different things. Pretty fun really.

I should also mention that I don't drive like a bitch. I like to be up front in the "pack"- I don't like following other drivers, I can get much more consistent speeds since 10% of drivers use their CC.

I've found the same thing with my Ty. For me, the difference between driving for the best mileage and driving "normal" is so minimal, it's not worth it. As far as hypermiling, the extra wear on tires, starters, etc. makes it seem ridiculous to me. Besides, I didn't buy a SyTy to get good mileage.

The best mileage i ever got on the sy was 23.5 mpg. flat land and driving around 55-60 enjoying the scenery with my wife. It's very tough to keep the foot out of it.
I once drove from SF to Fresno in my Land Cruiser. 4 speed manual and carb. You should have seen me hypermiling that thing. It was the only time. Even semi trucks were leaving me behind but sure got almost 17mpg. I average about 10-12 in SF. On a slight downhill that thing will roll forever.

Back in 2011, I saw 24-25MPG in the Ty going to and from Denver Nats. No A/C, one window down, the other cracked, new tires, fresh alignment, HTP chip, and not getting crazy with speed/boost. This was all highway/interstate.

My '92 DD Blazer gets incredible gas mileage (highway). I see "consistent" highway MPG of 25-27. Have seen 28.5 and 30MPG on a couple occasions. The city economy is horrid, maybe have seen a best of 16.5, small town stop and go driving. The aerodynamics are probably worse than a SyTy, taller, larger tires, 3.42 rear end, 4X4, 4-door, CMFI engine. I keep the A/C off, one window down, the other cracked, cruise control used constantly, and speed kept under 70. 67-68 MPH seems to be the sweet spot.

A combination of A/C and speeds over 70 seem to be the biggest killers in my experience with my S-series trucks.

Same here, best I've ever gotten was about 25 mpg, that was on the way to Denver Nats, going 55 mph, drafting the twins big ass car trailer.

never hypermiled the Typhoon, but I did get 22 MPG driving it back from Nats in 2002, simply by driving like a pussy (temporary trans I had in it sucked, it rained a lot so going fast wasnt a good idea).

Past that, mileage was never a major concern when I was really driving it daily because gas was still around $1.00 :(

I haven't really bothered hypermiling my Jetta simply because it gets awesome mileage already. I'd rather make up time and get where I wanna go than worry about saving $4.00 over 600 miles.

Mile High SyTy
Re: Anyone ever hypermiled a Sy/Ty?

i did it once driving back and forth to boulder for 1 weeks worth of work (4 day work week). it was 111 miles 1 way from my house. took 2 tanks of gas that week, and started with aprox 1/4, so my best estimate was around 24/25. (miles around boulder bumper to bumper getting lunch added into this scenario). I would find a semi coming out of springs doing 10 under the speed limit and ride his ass till we hit turnoff for boulder. glad i put another motor in the integra, cause i can set cruised at about 82 and still get 35mpg

Never attempted any hypermiling my Ty. I recall getting around 19 MPG back and forth to the Denver Nats. That was using cruise control, A/C and driving between 75 & 80 MPH (the I-70 speed limit in Western Kansas is 75 MPH.).
