anyone have experience with borg warner turbos?

i'm using bowtie heads on my new motor and will be making my own exhaust manifolds. i am planning to set it up for a single T4 turbo to broaden my options for turbos and not be stuck with syty specific precision stuff

i am considering an s400sx. it has a 75mm inducer and a .90 a/r t4 hot side with a 79 trim turbine wheel

spool time with this turbo kinda concerns me, it has a big turbine wheel. on the other hand i was concerned with my current stock 94 z code short block (non syty), stock vortec heads and a mild crane came (.430 lift) using a mpfi 2114 and a pt6152e with a .85 side would spool slow but i build 6 psi at only 2200 rpm and am hitting 18psi by 3100rpm. the new motor can move alot more air so i think it could suit the s400sx very nicely. my goal is 550 rwhp with about 15 psi boost

considering the s400sx or a turbonetics tc76 or 74 p trim with a .81 a/r t4 housing

thanks in advance for any info

that AR ratio seems a little steep. It will be great to produce peak HP but I think, and
could be wrong, that your midrange will suffer.

Here is an example. On a base early vortec L35 and a T31 with a .89 AR (large T03)
it will reach 10 lbs of boost at approx 2500 rpm in a standard transmisson car,
no boost launch.

A T04B P trim turbine with a .69 AR has a slightly wider vent (in width) but since the
diameter is much larger it actually has a much larger vent area.
This alone allows the T04B to support from 500 to 750 HP compared to the T31 which
peaks out at around 500 hp.

On the same engine, same compressor, the T04 started makeing boost 500 rpm later
and reached 10lbs at 3500. On the up side the rush from 3500 to 5500 felt twice as hard
as the T31 which I belive was due in part to it starting to strangle the exhaust.

Im sure the guys here have a ton of experience with this and you should see a pile of replys.
Keep in mind what your goal is... a truck that hauls a$$ through the whole range or are
you looking for peak HP.

Re: anyone have experience with borg warner turbos?

thanks for the reply.

i want a truck that makes good useable power above 3000-3200rpm. i dont want to rev this motor above 5500rpm. i like the s400sx because its very affordable for its size yet the hot side seems small enough to possibley work on my motor. i know it will make a killer top end, better than the tc76 for sure but i think maybe the tc76 will suit the motor better and spool faster. they are both very similar in price. its hard to pass on the borg wanrer stuff cause the ETT compressor wheels are so damn efficient and the s400sx hot side is about the smallest you can get with the borg warner stuff that i know off

on the other hand i know another guy with a .96 a/r t4 p trim on his 4.3 and it boosts just like my current setup. it just so hard to predict how a turbo will perform on a given motor it seems. the 79 trim is a much bigger wheel then the p trim but the a/r is smaller. who knows lol

Generally you can get away w/a large turbine wheel as long as you have a corectly sized turbine housing.
But that A/R of .90 seems a little too big ,unless you have a loose converter.
What stall are you running?

i run a 5 speed manual. one day i'll switch to a th400 with a stall to match whatever turbo i'm running.

i had alot of people (not on this board) tell me that a .85 a/r t3 was way to big but i couldnt be happier with it on my current setup.

A T3 & T4 A/R's are not the same.

Example a .85 T3 will flow less than a T4 .85 housing.

with my gtq74 i made max boost by 4000rpm street manors where great and spoolup felt instant. great strip street turbo. got mine from erue at turbo time good guy to deal with as well.

What is your exhaust turbine A/R?
Max boost @ 4000 RPM seems a bit high for haveing good street manners????

Now, if you have a loose converter I guess you could call it good street manners/instant spoolup???

thats another thing i was wondering, thanks for clearing that up. sounds like maybe the turbonetics .81 t4 could possible be similar to a .85 t3. i'm wonderg if maybe Jose at forced inductions could put something special together for me that uses a borg warner compressor wheel

if you could get the s400sx with a .81 t4 P or Q trim i would be all over it

Re: anyone have experience with borg warner turbos?

it is what they come with I don't remember off hand either .85 or .93 with a 9/11 3000stall when your truck is making 600plus hp you dont need full boost low end it just breaks the tires loose 4k for a street strip truck is ideal. Look at some data files most trucks even close to stock will be in 3k range you will not even feel the difference

For the most part,Turbos like Turbonetics,PTE & others all copy the Garretts design, so I would think some stuff are interchangable.

Garrett is a huge Co that is owened & affiliated with others. Aircraft ,automobiles, & other products they make, they have the time & $$$ to do a lot od R&D on there turbos & most people/companies copy there producs.

from what i have been told, borg warner/airwerks is a gigantic company as well. their ETT wheels seem to be the way to go right now

still getting some info on these turbo's, found a t6 .80 a/r for the s400 series turbos, got a quote for an s372 with a .80 t4 as well, still waiting to hear back

I have a S475 w/ 1.10 AR ex. housing that I plan on running some day.
It's a monster, weighs over 45 lbs.

yes they are, the s400sx weight 39lbs. i lost 50 lbs by switching from iron to aluminum heads so this will just add a good 20lbs right back lol. i guess a 30lb net loss is still pretty good

planning on using that with a 4.3?

looks cool. i wouldnt want a hot side nearly that big but hey if your spinning the hell out of the motor that turbo would be a killer
