Anyone sell a 700r rebuild kit like George Blake used to? ---

pppssssshhhhhtttttttttttt
I ran across a thread mentioning George Blake, and remembered that he used to sell a 700r4 "rebuild kit". It was EXPENSIVE ... but it appealed to me because it had all the parts for a quality SYTY rebuild. I felt I could hand it over to any tranny shop, and as long as they used the parts ... the rebuild would be a success.

Does anyone currently offer a kit like that?

I dont have a garage, or the means to take out my tranny to SEND it to be built. Thats another reason I wanted to go the "rebuild kit" route.

THANKS :) ---

I just want to make sure the parts that our trucks break the most ... are replaced with the best parts out there. A regular tranny guy may overlook these parts.

Like we all know, a SYTY tranny is NOT a "regular" 700r/4l60e (it wears a LOT different)

Our trucks can eat up a tranny STOCK ... and some f-body guys can run 10's without problems, lol ---

I don't know what specific parts you should by, etc but I have found www.wittrans.com to be easy to navigate, order, etc for the most general stuff. They won't show billet shafts, etc though.

They have a local place also thats nice to go get parts when your in a hurry.

Or, put another way, it's the guy building the trans.

It'll be difficult to find a local trans shop that will spend the time necessary to do what needs to be done correctly. They want to slap it together and get their money.

There are places that *can* do the work, the question is, will they?

Also, certain parts/brands are like religion to trans guys. No matter what you tell them to use, they won't do it if it's different from what they know.

There have been lots of parts lists posted over the years... they all have similar parts, but they all differ slightly. There's a lot of personal taste involved.

Your best chance is with a local shop that comes recommended by a large number of your local racing population - the guys that actually drag race, not the guys who talk about racing on boards. Then, go visit the shop and talk to the guys. If the shop is sloppy, dirty, or looks disorganized, walk away.

Expect to pay more than normal rebuild prices for a properly done trans. If the guy has to spend more time doing it, he'll want more money.

What about this place:
http://www.700r4l60e.com/

I believe I saw this in an old thread from Tooky, but I can't find it through search. Haven't used them personally though.

Dana from probuilt is a super nice guy, sells excellent quality parts and will walk you through a performance trans rebuild if you are up to it.

He has his own specific forum that is geared at DYI trans builds. Here is the link: http://www.700r4l60e.com/forum/

He built the 4L60e for my SS and I beat the living s*#t out of it. It is built to handle 700 hp and some guys have been beating on the same trans in 9 to 10 second cars with no problems. Yes there is a difference in AWD vs. 2WD and Torque, 375ish (Full bolt on SS) vs. 450ish (stock SyTy) but he has built trans for SyTy's with good
results.

Hope this helps,

if anyone wish's to contact me I can put together a kit for you to assemble your own trans but I don't recommend it. you need special tools and a good bit of knowledge to put one together correctly. kits don't come with my warrenty. and for only a few more bills you get a correctly assembled trans that you don't have to worry about.

Anybody who is considering doing their own tranny, should buy a good manual, but also get one of the DVD's that are out there on rebuilding the tranny. I recently bought one on the 4L60E produced by www.technicalvideos.com, I felt it was very informative. Unlike a manual, a video will show you, what the problems and wear issues on the hard parts are. Even a few of trhe trricks for sissassemble and assembly. As far as specialty tools, yes they do make the job much easier and safer, but I've seen a lot of guys who do it without most of them. You could compress most of the clutch piston drum sets with an arbor press. I've seen a few homemade compressor for the rear piston in the case, that works better then my KD universal tranny compressor. Personally I've never done any of the OD trannies, but have done several hundred of earlier one, such as TH350's, TH400's, Powerglides, 940's, 727's, C4's, C6's and even a few BorgWarners. From watching the video, I don't see much differance in the newer OD tranny, or the tool required. Maybe somebody should produce a DVD on doing the Sy/Ty trranny and its unique issues

I have built my own trannies from day one. My first time out, I used the Haynes manual. It is vague at best and really shows you the basics. To this day I do not own the ATSG. I am in good with a local shop which happens to have a Syclone owner as the shop owner. They help me A LOT with my builds. Normal wear is NOT common sense to someone who doesn't do this frequently. I learn something new every single time I build a trans. One thing is to be sure to note somewhere everything you do learn about building your trans. One reason I choose to build my own is because for as often as these break I would be a poor man if I had to pay someone every time. Sure I could keep it together longer but I have a sickness that I can not be nice to my truck, it takes A LOT of abuse. I actually don't mind doing it either, it can be fun. Make sure you get your parts from your trans shop and often support will come with them. Plus, I refer a ton of people to my shop here, its all about scratching backs.

So how well would a ls swap with a 4l60e tranny hold up in a ty?. The swap would be a bit cheaper and easier to do as you would be able to keep the same driveshafts and wouldn't have to change the output shaft on the tranny, keep the stock crossmember and a few other minor things.

If your not doing forced induction on a LS series it would have a chance.

Depending on which 4L60E you're going to run, it might not bolt up to the transfercase. Since the newer better ones, have more bolts on the tailshaft. If you used a GM PCM to control it, you would be able to adjust the shift pressures to make it last longer

This is what I was looking for, but I dont want to assemble it myself.

I want to find a reputable Tranny shop , then hand them the kit and say USE THESE PARTS. It would just make me feel better knowing every part going into the install.

Thanks :) ---
