Anyone using just a spin-on filter on the block...

What was the purpose of having the oil filter mounted on the fender?

Factory setups incorporate an oil cooler and it just made it easy to change the filter. More of a carry-over part from being a 4x4 chassis (common for remote filters to be on GM 4x4s).

I was thinking about doing this on my typhoon to clean things up a little, does anyone think there would be any issues with oil cooling?

Doubtful.....a lot of us have already axe'd the oil cooler anyhow and have yet to see any issues. I imagine there is some thermal relief in just going through the lines to the filter and back, but I doubt it's enough to make a difference. Normal 4.3s and SBCs live a long time w/o oil cooling, and the turbo doesn't add that much heat.

Yank it and use just a filter I say.....and do.

Without the cooler , do you use a different remote filter housing ? I sure could use the space where this stock crap is now .

Just need the spin on adapter from a small block. And put it in place of the remote line mounts.

If you wish to delete ONLY the COOLER and lines to it, but leave the filter in the stock 'fender' location, use P/N 12551416 filter housing. This one doesn't have the holes drilled for the cooler hoses. About 35.00 at the stealer.

Dave does that alternate housing have the plugged port on the front like the stock does ? My turbo gets fed from that hole and if your answer is yes , that makes for a cheap-easy fix . Thanks .

Have you tried this, or are we making assumptions again (guessing)?

The 4.3 filter pad is smaller in diameter than the 5.7, so the PF454 won't fit the recess on a 4.3 block. Either will a "spin on adapter from a small block". I just tried it. Not even close. Won't work.

I did verify the Wix 51040 is a short version of the PF52 (Wix 51036), and would probably work nicely with a direct mount adapter. My S/T parts fische (91-94) doesn't list any applications with direct-mount filters for 4.3. I know that an 89 S-10 (S=2WD) LB4, no KC4 or VO1, has a direct mount filter. I just can't find the P/Ns for it. My 'book' isn't old enough. :dunno:

I also looked in my Y-car fische, There is a filter adapter for 1992 & 93 (no oil cooler, direct-mount filter) LT1 PN 10168497. It lists for about $20.00. Not sure if it will work on a 4.3. These engines (92-96) use a PF53, just like the 4.3 does (regardless of location on the S/T). I'm not sure wether the block pad is different or not. Prior to 92, the 5.7 'Y' used a PF25, which has been superceded by the PF454.

If you wish to delete ONLY the COOLER and lines to it, but leave the filter in the stock 'fender' location, use P/N 12551416 filter housing. This one doesn't have the holes drilled for the cooler hoses. About 35.00 at the stealer.

There's some info on filters and adapters. HTH. Took about an hour to research and write it for y'all.

Yeah I have it on my 92 motor. Which came out of a 92 ty and I have the matching vin. You might be right but that is what was used on the block in my truck. And I believe it was the ph454 oil filter but I will check on tuesday.

Since you could run a longer filter that's probably a good thing for extended oil changes, but my Sy won't be a daily driver.

Re: Anyone using just a spin-on filter on the block...

Well I was just talking to my friend who truck is in now. And it is off a 93 tbi motor. And the ph454 is on my Lt1 the filter from the 4.3 is a ph52 short. Sorry for the confusion I got trucks mixed up. the adapter looks similar to the one pictured above, but with a shorter filter otherwise it will inter fear with the prop shaft. On the lt1 truck I have to have the truck up with all the tires in the air and the truck in neutral so I can spin the front shaft to slide the filter out.

I can get a picture on Tuesday when I am back at home if needed.

for the record, the corvette adapter won't work. this is because it uses the same mounting pad as a gen I SBC. its going to have the larger OD.

I assume a V8 TBI?

These filters are not interchangeable. The gasket diameters are different.

LT1 truck.. Not a V6,huh?

The original question was how to install a filter directly to a V6? All this discussion about what fits and works on V8s is confusing and misleading, because V8 stuff DOES NOT FIT a 4.3 V6. THE BLOCKS ARE DIFFERENT in the filter pad area.

There is a way, but it is with a V6 4.3 part. P/N 14081300. It is that threaded thing that screws directly into the block. Then use the PF47 (short version of PF35).

DaveP

Alrighty look at my signature I am sorry I have done this to an lt1 in my s10. And to a 4.3 liter out of a 92 typhoon in my now friends blazer. I am sorry I got them mixed up and no you are right small block parts are not direct interchangeable with the 4.3's sorry.

They make an adapter and it uses a fram part number ph3980S which is the ph3980 short go to checker and you can find it.

If you interchange the filters it also comes up with the PF47.
Sorry for the confusion it is finals week and I was just trying to help out I will get a picture of it installed when I get home around tuesday.
