Are alarms really worth it these days?

You never see anything but factory on cars and nobody pays attention if they do hear an alarm. The biggest benefit I can think of is the ability to warn me that somebody is out messing with my truck and I can get outside with my gun and rectify the situation.*

But really is there any value in it these days?

I've been thinking of a two way setup so it can tell me within range if something is happening.:2cents:

alarms are only going to keep amateurs and pranksters from stealing whats inside the truck, it will not stop it from being stolen.

A two way is a must. If it warns you one time, its pays for itself. I was at the grocery one store one windy day, and while I was inside, the two way paged me (it will actually tell you how hard someone hit or touched your car, whether it was just a bump or hard like a hammer). I ran outside and seen a lady walking away looking all guilty. I did a quick once around and found that she had lost control of her door in the wind and it had smashed and cracked the cladding on the fender. I ran her down and made her fess up.

If I wouldn't have had the alarm I just woulda been fubar.

Alarms are deff worth it. I have the omegalink on my Sy. It has unlimited range. My I phone is my remote. Very easy to use, the service is only $50 a year or $120 for three. It has remote start, windows up and down via my phone. The cost of the omegalink is $450. Just a plain 2-way pager is a complete waste of time and money. :2cents:

Off topic but here it goes...
How does the starter kill work?
Would it be better to use it as the ECM kill?
If it works like I think it does, once triggered, all one has to do is drive around until the computer re learns the fueling/timing tables.
Thoughts?

Not sure if it is available in your state but Lojak is the way to go. Does not prevent it from being stolen but will surely get it back.

I was just talking about this yesterday with my friend who does alarm installs.

We both agreed with the earlier statement that sirens, horn honks, beeps, etc are annoying and no one pays attention to them anymore.

So I'm going with a silent 2 way system. You pay an annual fee and you can do everything from your phone. Locate your truck via gps, it'll text you if someone hits the car, or opens your door etc. And, you can lock, unlock, start, up/down windows, pop the back hatch (if you have a typhoon) all from your phone. The one i'm looking at even has a turbo timer in it and comes with a remote that can activate features from a mile away.

As long as your system has a starter kill, the only way someone is gonna steal your truck is with a flatbed.

If i remember right the ultimate chips have an ecu kill on them as well. So with an alarm system, that's starter kill and ecu kill, no way anyone is taking the truck without a flatbed.

I have no problem dropping a few hundred bucks for all of those features and peace of mind.

Re: Are alarms really worth it these days?

I have a starter killer in an undisclosed location that blends right into the factory dash and is hidden. Great feature. Also Ive heard of alarm systems that cut power to the fuel pump and/or ecm. Back in the day they made something similar to "The club" that went over the brake and didnt allow the pedal to move and was almost impossible to access to dismantle or remove without leaving yourself completely vulnerable to atttack

I didn't think so.Maybe you can update all these newbies on what you got and why we should care?

It's a low mile export truck is all I remember. And you live where I grew up

If you are worried about it being stolen, take out the chip. No chip = no run.

Best security system is having it torn down in a million pieces and never putting it back together all the while telling your friends and family (and extremely skeptical and disinterested girlfriend) how sweet it will be when it is running again but never really making any forward progress on it.

This system seems to work for me....fml.

Haha Jimmy it's ALLEGEDLY a low mileage truck with a bunch of saudi sand all over it.

All i can say is, if you're a noob and considering getting a truck out of state. Don't ship it. Go get the AAA ultra super premium membership, get on a plane, and drive it back home.

This ty is my own Shawshank Redemption... I didn't drive the it, and i didn't blow up it's motor, but I've paid for it and then some. I've been locked in a financial prison for years making payments and paying full coverage car insurance on a truck i can't even drive. But hope is a good thing Jimmy... when i picture myself driving down PCH with the windows down, a free man in a mint rebuilt Ty... part of me rejoices hahaha.

If i was smart like you and moved somewhere that cost a fraction of what it does to live here, my truck would've been fixed years ago. But it's a small price to pay to live in a town with no crime and have everything I could possibly want to do less than 2 hours away in any direction. Plus with the industry I'm in, I'm stuck in so cal whether I like it or not.:squint:
