are the C6 brakes that much better than C5?

has anyone had the C5s and switched up to the C6s who can honestly say there's a drastic difference to justify the extra cost? Or is the C5 kit sufficient?

I already have 17" wheels so if i want to go C6, I have to buy new wheels and tires which is at least another 2 grand that i could spend on something else like coilovers.

I'm sure the C6s are better, but are they $2000 better?

Honestly, you will lockup the c5's before you NEED c6 brakes. Hell, i locked up the LS1's i had on #1190 without much effort on the pedal.

I'm not trying to sell you on either one because it is your truck. But at the point you are at, its basically, do you want the big c6 brake look or not? Do you want to spend the extra coin or not? A tire can only handle so much brake and the SyTy's arent exactly built for stopping on a dime. Even if youre running some very grippy 275+ tires on the front, you will probably still be able to lock them with the C5's.

I was more than content with the LS1's. If i remember correctly, you can always upgrade from c5 to c6 with Renzfab's brake kit. Just a matter of getting new calipers, rotors and wheels to fit.

yeah i read through that brake thread before i started this thread...

Here's the thing, I already have the old bracket kit that CBR used to make to go with the C5s.

I like the idea of the 13.5" rotor and the 4 piston ctsv calipers. But what I'm asking is if there's REALLY that much of a noticeable performance difference between the C5 calipers and either the C6 or CTSv calipers that would justify going with that set up. Looks are secondary.

Re: are the C6 brakes that much better than C5?

In that case, it depends on what you plan on doing with the truck. Answer that question then you will answer your own question. Obviously there will be an increase in performance going to the C6/CTS-V stuff since its 4 piston and a larger disc. But is it needed for the action your truck will see? You're already talking about a BIG brake kit from stock. 13" from 10.5" which is almost a 20% leverage increase on disc alone. Throw in the larger pads and that number goes up.

The 14" CTSV rotors give 7.7% increase in leverage over the already huge 13" C5. I just see you running out of traction before brake strength. If the LS1 brakes were any indication of upgrade performance, the CTS-V will be VERY touchy. My shins got more of a workout that my calves with the LS1's since i was always trying to ease off the brake.

So, figure out what you want out the truck and go from there.

Get the coilovers instead.

X2. Sounds like you're still rollin on stock brakes so give the C5's a try and get coilovers. Cheaper and you kill multiple birds with one stone. Brake upgrade, coilover upgrade, no need to get rid of the CBR brake kit, and no new wheels, tires and larger, more expensive brake kit. If it comes down to it, you can always upgrade later when money is not so much an issue.

Re: are the C6 brakes that much better than C5?

i did some surfing around comparing prices etc... and I can actually put the CTSv rears on front and back of my Ty for less than the C5s (oem new). The money i'm saving there actually exceeds what I paid for the CBR kit for 4 years ago. So it's pretty much a wash at this point.

What I don't know is if I'll need a new master cylinder and brake booster if I go with the CTSVs. Years ago I thought I read that you could use the stock master cylinder and booster if you went C5 front and rear. If that's true and the stock stuff won't work with the CTSVs, then I might have to stick with the C5s.

Anyone have any info on that?

Big in the rear
Im pretty sure you don't need a new booster and masterC, but if you put any disk on the rear an adjustable proportioning valve is recommended.
