Back in the Typhoon Game.

Re: Back in the Typhoon Game.

Since Calif doesn't like old cars on the road it probably just fails everyone "over a certain age". The car not you... :rotf: Nice to have someone on your side.

Re: Back in the Typhoon Game.

3 years ago when it failed, it blew a ~150HC at idle. The limit is 100. My DD work truck with its 250K mile cat is real close to the limit. The Ty and Blazer were also always close too. This thing yesterday was 5 at idle. I'm pretty sure the additive helped. I also noticed that the exhaust was really HOT when I placed my hand near the pipe to feel for misfires. I think this stuff promotes Cat Con light-off, Makes it more efficient. I also runs really smooth too.

I think the additive helped. I'm sure the fresh plugs did too, as well as a new dist cap as the old one had burned the center button out.

I don't know why it failed, because the numbers were just fine less than 5 minutes before we ran the test. The cat couldn't have cooled off that quickly. I did notice it seemed to have a miss at idle, which it didn't the night before. Perhaps one of the OEM Delco plug wires I installed in 1997 (19 years ago!) has finally decided to develop resistance and cause a miss. The guy used the car and its tailpipe emissions to pass the test. the numbers at 2500 were 17ppm and .03 CO. That's the cleanest 4.3 I recall ever, and I've had a lot of them.

And the sequel is that this afternoon the DD finally has had enough of me procrastinating putting a new flex plate and starter in it. I've been putting this off for several months. I usually starts after a few attempts. Not this afternoon. It's done. After 5 minutes of trying, I finally gave up and pushed it out of the way so I could get the Ty out of its spot. So I'll be rocking a Ty next week to go to the boats. I have several jobs going, none of which will make a mess. If I need to change oil or something, I have the Super Duty.

Paul-Z: Congrats!

Re: Back in the Typhoon Game.

Dave as part of the testing, did they pressure test the fuel system and gas cap? That is the 1 test that will fail U and not show it on the paper. (Or when I lived there it didn't show). I have never miss Cali since I left, although I miss some of my Sy/Ty friends. So much better here in Ohio and we have a lake with 13' waves too so they say.

It didn't get that far. My guy manually over rides the evap canister test (or something. He used to clamp the hose at the canister, this time he didn't. He's cool with his longtime clients that bring him 3-4 cars a year, and he doesn't have trouble with). For the "cap test" he puts his thumb over the hole inside the fixture to fake it. My caps always pass this way.

I'm a SoCal Native. Born in Los Angeles and raised in La Canada. Been in SoCal 60+ years and am well aware of the changes. What really chaps my azz is that California is now a never to be anything else but a Blue State. I doubt many people are aware that California was predominantly Republican for decades. IMO, the beginning of the major political shift began in the late 80's with Regan's first Amnesty for illegals. That opened the floodgates for all ethnic groups, and SoCal has really changed. I have an exit plan, but it may take awhile to implement. I envy those of you that have "gotten out". I've never been super-motivated to leave, mostly because I enjoy my work, and need to keep working for a couple more years. But even my street is changing. I'm ready to get serious about making the exit. Let the illegals from all over the world have what's left, although I don't know who the State is going to collect taxes from to pay for everything. The Producers are leaving or "Going Gault". I went Gault years ago, and will soon leave too.

Re: Back in the Typhoon Game.

After always being a cynic of snake oil type products, a couple of years ago, I used a product called cataclean for the first time on a non syty vehicle that had borderline emissions levels. It worked and just by the smell of the tail pipe, I could tell the efficiency of the 20 year old cat had increased.
This year after struggling every year to pass emissions with my ty, I used some on that. It had been stood for two years and still passed easier than it ever had before. The product you used may well be a similar product. I believe cataclean is now sold in the US under the Mr Gasket brand. Apart from lubeguard in the trans, and previously 'other' occasional fuel system cleaners I dont tend to go for additives.
I am sold on cataclean though. It works for me. Good luck with yours, I hope it passes.

Cataclean is paint thinner rebooted. Read the label sometime...it says keep away from painted surfaces and smell it and then smell paint thinner.....hmmm....gets ya thinking. Check out YouTube scotty Kilmer catalytic converter clean video. I'm sure I'll get scolded for this statement.

Preach on! Preach on!!! I will be out of this god forsaken hellhole by March, only to move to another blue state (WA), which is bad, just not as bad as CA... yet.

It's mind blowing how Jerry Brown ever got elected again. The "laws" that keep getting passed here keep getting more and more asinine, from guns, to cars, to plastic fvcking bags, to not being able to burn wood in your fireplace. And worse, people keep voting for the idiots who make up this crazy shit.

I got out in '01 and have never looked back. Well, that's not true. We had a successful business, a circle of friends, and some family in Cali. We packed everything up and moved back to where I grew up. But it was very hard starting over and making "new" friends is still a challenge. My advice...move to where you have a support network of friends and family present if at all possible.

I was a SoCal Native too. Best thing I did when I retire was move from there. Hell, I even went in the service to get out, only to get station up in northern Calif. Dave, you could work here if you wanted too (Lake Erie has a lot of boats and ships on it). It only took 55.5 years for me to leave, but I made it.

1 more very important thing about moving (Your vote will count here).:rotf:
