Beat Suspension

I went to my brothers for New Years, which involved speeding down 295. I don't drive my Ty very fast often and now I know why. My suspension is F'ed. I don't have the money for a dustan suspension, but I am willing to spend a few bucks to get the right parts for a stock rebuild. My question is what all do I need? I was thinking about buying a PST kit or a Performance Suspension Components kit, but I have read on here that moog is the way to go with the hardware. I think I need to do something about my steering box too. Any help on what I should get and where to get it would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

Start with a rear sway bar if you don't have one. Suspension Techniques are supposedly the best. I have an Addco I haven't installed from the recent GP.

The PST kit is fine. Great as far as the bushings themselves and I don't think there is anything to really knock with the ball joints and tie rod ends. I'm going to Moog because money isn't a concern. When I get around to the Ty I'll just use the whole PST kit.

Bilstein HD's seem to be the best compromise of performance and price from what I have read. They seem to be the best suited non-adjustable shock for our vehicles. The Sports apparently are a bit too stiff. There are other shocks like Konis that are perhaps better but they will cost more money as well. Check sportmachines for more owner feedback on shocks.

I know what you mean with the Ty being dangerous to drive. Mine feels the same way. Just no time to look after it right now as the Sy is taking my time. I'd try the above fixes though before worrying too much about the steering. Good luck.

Dean,
Thanks. Is there anything not in the PST kit that should be replaced? I want to fix it all when it is apart. I was leaning towards the bilstein HDs and the ST sway bar too, I guess I will give it a go.

Does anyone have any experience with the Performance Suspension Components kit? http://www.performancesuspension.com

Thanks again.

I have the PST kit in my truck. It seemed to be 100% improvement over the stock front end. I too just got my rear sway bar on the GP. Might install that this weekend if i get my truck running again.

One item i dont hear people talk about much anymore is the Rancho steering stabilizer. Anyone have one? Comments? Goods & Bads?

If you still want to tighting up your steering I offer a new style tierod that does not use ball joints and really makes a nice difference in the feel of the steering. Please email or call for info or if you want some ideas on suspension upgrades please email or call. I have lots of ideas besides my coilover kits.

I have the Rancho steering stabilizer on my Ty. I did notice a little bit of a difference in the amount of wondering that happens when driving on un-even roads but that's about it. Not really worth getting in my opinion.

I'm going to swap out my rear end this summer for one off a '97 (I think) Firebird to gain rear discs and posi. I'll need another 1 for the front to have posi. I was told that I can also take the steering gear box for a tighter dial. Is this true? Also, what is the difference between Sy/Ty control arms, torsion bars, etc... and those off a 4x4 Blazer or Jimmy?

Why dont you have Posi now?

I am pretty sure there is a reason for not having posi in to front on the street... might wanna look into that

What is it? I have never heard of a FWD car that came with a posi front end but I have heard of FWD (Dodge Neon) drag racers that put posi front ends IN their cars and said it made a big difference. I am not versed enough in cars to figure this out for myself so if you could just tell me that would be great. My only guess is that the front does the steering but that doesn't really preclude the rear from turning at different speeds on a turn either, so I'm at a loss here..

PS: My open front end on my Sy has caused me some big left front wheelspin on the launch before, I know it was because of poor tires but if I ever get in the high HP range, this problem may come back to bite me again even with good tires. So if a posi front end is an option I would like to hear about it. Thanks again.

well, i know on 4x4 trucks, if you try and drive with 4WD engauged on the street, the tires tend to chirp, hop, and your steering is greatly reduced because of the rotational difference between the left and right tires. now I guess there is a difference between true posi front ends and posi rears. perhaps it has to do with the transfer case, or perhaps it has to do with the hubs on 4x4 trucks. I cant really tell ya. I was just throwing it out there so someone didnt screw themselves by spending all this money on a posi unit then not be able to drive properly on the street. unfortunately i am not experienced in 4x4's enough.

Rears are limited slip/posi type. Fronts are NOT, they are open.

Andrew put a locking front in his Ty, launched sideways, literally. Not sure if that was a result of the locker or other problems.

Many 4x4 guys would rather use the manual locking type for front diffs, as they can switch it locked/unlocked, so as to not cause problems when going round corners. There are some systems that can be run that automatically lock, but usually have some odd results.

So to me, the jury is still out if they'd help or not. Expensive test.

Brian, do you know if anyone out there has tried an Air-Locker posi unit up front? That too is expensive, but would be pretty trick if posi front made a large difference.
