Belt tensioner bouncing??

I've replaced the water pump on my TY while I was at it I replaced the Belt, Belt tensioner and pully. The tensioner pully bounces. The folks at the local radiator shop suggested the belt was too long. I replaced it with one an inch shorter. Some improvement, but it bounces more that belt tensioner on my 05 Pontiac GXP or my Chev. HHRSS. Does any body have a suggestion. I'm baffeled.

I would pull the belt off and make sure that all your pulleys spin freely. You may have something getting ready to lock up on you.

How does your idler pulley look? It's the one in the lower left below:

If it has a "faceted" (flat spots worn on it) look to it, it should be replaced. However, it would have the have VERY severe wear to cause the tensioner to bounce. Everything is tight too correct?

The Idler pully looks good I didn't replace it. It's smooth and has no flat spots, no radial play. everything I look at looks good. Looks like I'll have to put a dial indicatoe on all the pullys. Can you think of anything else?

Re: Belt tensioner bouncing??

If it's the original platic idler then change it ASAP. Squeek or no squeek the bearing is prolly toast. That or maybe you've got the water pump pully on a bit crooked? With motor running look at all the pullies including the tensioner. Some bounce is normal but if something is out of round then it bounce allot.

Thats strange on the pully setup in your picture the plastic pully w/ the spokes is an idler pully and the metal pully is the tensioner pully. on my TY the idler pully is the metal one and the tensioner is the plastic one w/ the spokes. Do you think it makes any differance?

Re: Belt tensioner bouncing??

That's not my picture but both pullies are available and current production both are metal. I strongly suggest you replace the plastic pulley (and its bearing, they come as an assembly) regardless of position.

Took your advice. Replaced both pullys. Helped some. Maybe I'm being to critical. Some of the local mechanics say the bounce isn't excessive. Thnx for the advice.
