bent pushrods

is there a good way to adjust the rocker arms with a bigger cam.......i did it the stock way or the way the books all say.........but it turned out to be way to tight and bent some of my pushrods..........

Look at the geometry of the valve train real close. Assuming there is plenty of clearance between the valve and piston on the intake and exhaust strokes then it is probably the valve train binding somewhere. If the adjustment is too tight normally it will hold the valve open all the time and it will run bad or not at all. Check the rocker arm where it pivots at full open.

Also, check for coil bind on the valve springs.

Usually, bent pushrods mean one of three things:
  • 1. Coil Bind.
    2. Valves hitting pistons.
    3. Rocker arm hitting the stud because the slot underneath isn't long enough.

could just tightning them down to tight cause them to bend....just rebuild my motor and this is what is done to the heads............new screw in studs, recomemded springs for the cam.........1.6 roller tip rockers, and the cam has .500 in and .510 ex. on it............

One thing to add to the list of poss causes.. Push rods hitting the slots in the heads with 1.6s.

What method/book did you adjust them by? What valve spring are you using? Using stock push rods? Are you using the comp cams roller tip rockers?

im using the all comp cams stuff.........cam, springs, pushods, and roller tip rockers............its all the stuff they reccommended to use..........the only pushrods i bent were the #5 exhaust and #1 intake

do you use that for self aligning 1.6 rockers....b/c it was talking about guide plates? just curious....thanks

You don't really need the Louis tool when you put 1.6 rockers on heads originally designed for self-guiding rockers. That tool was originally developed to allow folks to make the slot longer on earlier-style heads where the pushrod slot itself acted as the guide plate. In fact, the Louis tool might not work at all for the self-guided-rocker heads, since they simply have 1/2" holes for the pushrods, instead of 5/16" (approx) slots.

Now, with that said, you may still need to clearance the pushrod hole a little when using 1.6 rockers. The bottom of the holes will be very close, but usually there is enough room. You would have to assemble/install both heads and all the pushrods and rockers to be sure, since every casting is a little different. On my engine, two of the holes needed to be clearanced just a hair.

well actually I needed the louis tool I used 1.6 self aligning rockers.. the pushrod was slightly rubbing the head before elongating the hole. I would think that you would need the tool if u r even using guide plates and u sense a bind somewhere near rocker arms or u will notice some metal particles ... its pretty much and insurance specially if your planning or revving it.

When you go to 1.6 ratio rocker arms, the springs are no longer matched to the cam because of the increased lift. IE: 1.5 ratio rocker arms with a .340 (lobe) lift cam = .510 lift. That same cam with 1.6 ratio's = .544 lift. I ran into this with my comp cam matched set. I had to buy a different set of springs . Also the inner part bottom of the valve spring retainer gets very close to the top of the valve guide (where the valve seal is).
