Boost Control/Waste gate

I am sure this has been addressed before, but I am having a hard time finding the thread/articles. After getting my sy back from an L35 conversion, I have started to do some data logging. Surprise surprise, I'm over boosting bad, pretty sure its past 2 bar and it spikes hard. I'm trying to pin it down, but I'm pretty sure it comes down to the waste gate not being actuated. When I let off of the throttle, I hear a pretty bad purging sound. Any advice out there?

Re: Boost Control/Waste gate

You really need a retune...

Did you only do the l35 heads?

If not get a walbro feul pump wideband and a 3bar map sensor

Re: Boost Control/Waste gate

I do need a re-tune, that's what I am trying to accomplish. When I bought the truck, the guy before me had put a new cam in, but he couldn't remember what he put in, which really sucks because to my knowledge there is no real way to tell what you have in there with out pulling it back out... 3 bar map is definitely on my list, and a fuel pump as well. At this point I was hoping to figure out a way to manage my boost with out the spiking and the over boosting. Any ideas on how to test the waste gate? The arm moves when I pull on it, and I can hear that surging noise when I let off of the gas

How is the wastegate rod adjusted? Make the rod longer, boost should come down.

Is it a stock wastegate actuator?

Re: Boost Control/Waste gate

When my wastegate actuator failed it wouldn't make any boost so I would start out by adjusting the wastegate actuator rod out some to see if it lowers your boost.

What boost levels are you seeing? 2 bar is 14.5 tops I think and a fuel pump upgrade should be fisrt mod on these trucks as the stocker is hardly enough for a stock truck driven by grandma or you'll run lean and melt a piston.

Pull the ECM and verify what chip you have... You might have some wacky Jo blow tune that sucks and could be causing the overboost issue.

Re: Boost Control/Waste gate

I actually just think my wastegate isn't working? But I will try the adjustment idea, could just be that. I have a pitbull atr chip in it now I believe. I switched from what I originally had (a Jet one). My data logs show it spiking way bad, nothing consistent. My thinking right now is to get the overboosting fixed; then move ahead with the better fuel pump, 3 bar map, wideband, my own ALDL cable and some good tuneage going on. The tuning is what I feel like I am the least capable with, but I know I've stepped into a new realm with adding the heads and it has to be done.
Speaking of tuning, what are you guys running? Code 59? Ultimate chip? Stand alone?

Re: Boost Control/Waste gate

The atr pitbull chip is decent and safe tune for the most part so focus on your boost issue and don't go wot with it until you have it figured out

Re: Boost Control/Waste gate

Adjust the wastegate to the factory spec. Disconnect connector on the boost solenoid, it should make 8-9psi. I personally would not do any WOT until you replace stock fuel pump and start working on a custom tune. (Different heads/cam really need a custom tune).

Re: Boost Control/Waste gate

I didn't realize that the fuel pump needed to be upgraded that bad! I'm on that, gonna find a good deal and order it. What brands do you guys have experience with for the Wide band?

Re: Boost Control/Waste gate

Walbro for the fuel pump. As wbo2 i prefer plx using them for about 6years whitout any problems

Re: Boost Control/Waste gate

I was checking out the walboro as well as the aeromotive fuel pump, the aeromotive may be a bit overkill. I never had a chance to do any data logging before the head swap, but the surging sound was there before. The wastegate is stock as is the turbo
