Boost Issue

I installed a Stage1 54mm turbo and am unsing a new factory actuator. I set the actuator with the proper preload. The problem is a major boost spike up to 25lbs and it falls back and stays at 10lbs. If you let off for a split sec and throttle up it will do it again. I adjusted the actuator out as far as possible and got it down to 20lbs but still the same drop in pressure.

Correct me if I'm wrong but is this is an indication the actuator is too small? I was hoping the factor boost module would bleed it to 15lbs and hold steady. Using the radar style chip and a 3bar.

Any suggestions?

Re: Boost Issue

The new stage1 54mm turbo didn't come with an actuator to use with? if it is truely hitting 25psi then you better stop driving that thing now

Re: Boost Issue

Any thoughts out there on this? Put a new solenoid in and have decent boost control bust still snot steady. When you throttle up boost will spike to about 18lbs when shifting into second. Then is drops down to 10-12lbs before building back up to a steady 15lbs.

Thanks in advance.

This boost spike into 2nd gear is usually a product of too small of a wastegate valve & or the wastegate hole needs to be opened up.

I do not know the inside dimention of your wastegate hole, but, on most turbos the hole can be opened up & smooth out the airflow for the wastegate exhaust path, meaning usually a nice gentle radius.:2cents:

Also, as atkonkler suggested, an electronic boost controller will help out tremendously especially if you do not have any capabilities of adjusting the wastegate solenoids duty cycle.

In most autos you will gain boost when shifting gears! What typeof tune r u using?injectors? Factory pcm cant rly handle the bar 3 map sensor! But a manuel boost contoller would help... i would get aboost controler and dont use the factory boost solnoid because wen its unplug but vaccumm going to it you WILL GET A BOOST SPIKE AND THEN WILL GO TO LIMP MODE AND ONLY RUN 10PSI? Had the problem when tried to go bar 3 and boost controler and stock everything else:tup:

Re: Boost Issue

Buy a electronic boost controller! I just put mine in its a aem truboost, but I'll tell you what ! Way better boost control and no more boost flutter at wot! Best thing so far I've done other than a sway bar in the rear!

I've got a solid tune with a radar style 10-1 for 50# injectors and a 3 bar. AFR are solid and I run 93+ Torco to get about 103-105 with no KR under 18lbs of boost. Couldn't ask for a better running truck. I've always had good luck with MBCs on all my cars but can't get rid of the drop and creep back up on my sy. I went back to the solenoid and the ecm seems to hold it solid after it creeps back up.

Maybe my manual controller is toast. I took it apart the other days and blew through it for an hour trying to figure out if the little BB and spring were messed. Wife was looking at me like I was crazy.

Re: Boost Issue

The AEM TRU Boost controller works great & will work much better than your manual boost controller.
Even though you say you "Couldn't ask for a better running truck" you will get a better running truck w/an EBC.

Re: Boost Issue

Not trying to jack your thread but while were on the topic of boost controllers, if you run a MBC or EBC do you need to run the factory boost solenoid or should you bypass it totally ? Is there any negative side effects of not running the boost solenoid? Doesn't it drop the boost if you were to over boost?

You pretty much said it. The major downside of going to a MBC \ EBC is that you will lose some of the "safeties" that are built into the factory boost control setup.

Sounds like your MBC isn't working.

What kind is it?

You will need to disconnect the factory boost controller when using an ebc , ask me how I found out!

Re: Boost Issue

The trucks Ecm will see the old solenoid and put it into limp mode. I'm running an aem truboost now , but when I hooked it up the factory solenoid had all the vacuum lines off of it and I hooked them up with the schematic for the aem solenoid. Keep in mind I left the stock solenoid plugged in but no vacuum lines hooked up to it. Drove it and couldn't get over 5 lbs of boost. I was like hmmm Wtf? Ran fine before I put the ebc in! So me and qwertyphoon said let's unplug the factory solenoid! Then boom it was on like donkey Kong and the boost comes on like a bat out of Tahiti! One of the best mods I've done so far other than a rear sway bar. Highly suggested IMO!

Re: Boost Issue

TruBoost is a great investment. Boost gauge, better boost control with over lost protection, can't go wrong!
