bottom end knock

So... My broke motor mounts ripped my shift cable apart. I replace the mounts after putting it off for a good 8 months. I start the truck up and the there is a loud rpm dependent knock coming from the oil pan. The truck was quiet, no knock when I parked it like 8 months ago. Any Idea if this could be anything other than a bearing gone bad? the oil pressure shows almost 80 psi and drops to about 70-75 at idle. If this is a rod or main bearing knock.. why would sitting have caused this! I am so pissed. I finally get it driveable again and now the motor is shot! Can the oil pan come down on the sy without pulling the motor? I know my 2wd s10, it cant be pulled without pulling the motor.

Dont know what to tell you about your bottom end knock except that sucks and sorry to hear it. To ans. your question about the oil pan removal most guys in here will tell you to pull the motor but you can do it w/o pulling it. Unbolt the mounts use a small scissor jack on the front crossmember and lift the motor on the balancer till it hits the tunnel. Then unbolt the passenger side cv flange and you should be able to wiggle it out, the last one i did I had to unbolt the diff also which is really easy once you have an 18m offset box end wrench no longer than 7" to get to the bolt in the frame rail. Good luck it's fun.

If you did not clearance for the H Beams they may be hitting inside the block and on the pan causing your noise.

Re: bottom end knock

clearance the H beams? you talking about rods? the motor wasnt touched, I changed motor mounts. thats all. it ran perfect and quiet before.
thats awesome news that i can drop the pan without pulling the motor.. that means I can change the bearing fairly simply and inexpensively.
Thank you!

Dude don't run it at all, push it if possible. Mine knocked and just from moving it in out of the garage it trashed the crank. Yes you can change bearings without pulling the engine. Like injected said pull the diff. Take the time and pull the shaft as to allow more room to wiggle the diff out. Pull the prop shaft. I did mine is about 12 hours I guess, give or take. Unfortunatly it was a waste as I thought it would be once I saw my crank. I figured for the $25 for the bearings I would put it together and see what happens. Inspect the turbo oil and anti-freeze lines once back together and make sure they ddin't get damaged. Good luck though man it is fun. I muscled my diff in and out cause the odd shape makes it hard to balance on a jack.

Re: bottom end knock

whats really pissing me off is that the bitch ran perfect when i parked it!

WOW, sorry to hear about your bad luck, but it makes me feel better about my truck HAHAH.

My truck sat for 19 months , and my DRIVELINE/SUSPENSION is having problems HAHAH. The engine and tranny are more solid than I remember them being  ---

Re: bottom end knock

drain your oil, see if theres metal, if theres not, try to stick one of those magnets on a stick into your pan, drag it around and see if you find anything, if your knocking, your shredding metal off your bearing and you will find it fast, also take your filter off and cut it open with whatever you got and look and see if you find anything, there might be some little bits in there but your looking mainly for like, metalic flake, use a magnet to pick it out.

the reason you should check is because you just did some work on our motor mounts, its possible your high end knock is comming from another sorce...like impropolly installed engine mounts or something... ive done stuff like that....easy to mess up, and before you tear into your motor id take a look, just in case.

but yea, until your sure, dont start it again, ive been through a few motors and it can be a pain, id hate to have to tear my motor out of my ty, it looks...full in there...

Re: bottom end knock

I wanted to say the same thing. I put a big magnet on my drain plug for a few days to draw any metal to it. Also make sure if you put any pressure on on your oil pan it didn't flex and the crank/rods are hitting. Happened to me, had it supported with a 2x4 on the jack and it flexed just a **** hair and it hit afterwards. Use the old screwdriver as a stethoscope trick to locate the knock.

make sure you dont have a broken flexplate.....it would sound just like a rod knock...also check for backed out flexplate bolts...been there done that

Re: bottom end knock

how long have yu had i run? might be stupid that it just drained the oil out of the lifters and it tries to fill itselve. would take 60 sec in the worst case to fil them

If it were me I would not pull the front diff out. Just loosen it up let it drop enough to get the pan out, use a jack or a third man to support it. It only needs to be lowered about 3/4", but try to use straps to hold it steady if it feels even a bit wobbly while supported.

I wish mine went that easy. I had to remove my diff. The pan wouldn't get past the oil pump. Did you so something different?
