Bought a Sy! Need help!!

Hi guys, I'm flying to Atlanta this week to pick Sy #1917 up but I don't know what kind of plate I should use? I never bought a used car in the States so I don't know how to proceed. I still have the plate from my old BMW, which is still valid. Do I have to go to court in GA and ask for a temporary plate? Can I use my old plate(don't think so)??
TIA,
Pedro

where are you going with it? I see guys driving all around the counrty without plates. I wouldnt sweat it if you arent going very far. if you are then you might wanna consider putting the old piece of cardboard on there with the tag applied for logo on it. most states give you 30days from purchase to get your new tag. but you must have valid insurance from day 1.

I'll be driving down to Miami. I'm sorry but I don't get this part:
"old piece of cardboard on there with the tag applied for logo on it"
Thanks a lot

If You Sold The Other Car Just Put The Plates From It On The Truck Until You Get New Ones, Make Sure That You Have Insurance That Transfers To The Sy And If You Have The Registration And Plates From The Old Vehicle And A Bill Of Sale Or Reciept For The Sy You Should Be Covered

Re: Bought a Sy! Need help!!

Don't know how GA works (don't some states pick up tha plates on a sale?) but doesn't the truck have plates? Just leave them on it. Have proof of ownership and insurance papers with you and you should be good to go. I know people who intentionally leave their plates off and don't have problems but they drive new or almost new vehicles.

I would check with your insurance agent and ask him what he recommends. Some states have different rules.

I wouldn't sweat it too much. I think you're technically supposed to go get a temp. for it from the DMV, but my friend and I just took the Sy from Texas to CA with no plates and didn't have any trouble. Like they said, bring proof of ownership and your insurance.

Re: Bought a Sy! Need help!!

if the truck has plates on it already that are current then you can use those. if it doesn't have current tags then you need to get them current. if it has no plates then you need to get duplicates from the state you are buying it from, and then transfer it to the state you live.

Re: Bought a Sy! Need help!!

I drove back from Mark's house in IN to my house in florida over 3 days without a tag on the truck.

Even if you do get pulled over, just say you put a temp thing on it, and it must have blown off.. Most cops will give you a break if you show them a bill of sale saying you just bought the truck that same day and tell them exactly where you are going. ;)

In Georgia, the plates Stay with the owner, not the vehicle... So what some others say is acurate, keep the bill of sale with you and proof of insurance and any other paperwork the former owner can provide, in case something happens en route to Miami. Wherever you will be applying for a Tag/Taxes, thier rules should apply. There are quite a few owners/member's on this board that live near and around your route on I-75, that can give you a hand, if you have problems during your trip. The State Patrol's cars in Georgia are Mainly Blue w/ silver hood/decklid, in case you needed to know that.

Man, that's good info!
I'll be driving down through I-95 though.
If someone from the board can give me his cell# I would really appreciate, because I don't know anybody, except for Adam, but he is a little bit far from I-95 I think.
Thanks again everybody!! That's one of the reasons I'm proud to be part of this community!

proof of ownership and proof of insurance will get you by in GA. just show that you have just purchased the vehicle with a bill of sale and have your insurance already cover it before you pick it up and youre good.

if the truck is already registered in ga, it will cost you $20. for a transfer fee. If you register in Florida, you have to pay 7% sales tax. If you are taking it out of the country, I wouldn't worry about a tag. a bill of sale and the title is all you need in both states.

ya man.. im in the middle of the state... like 2.5 hour drive to get to I-95.

If you got the title, proof of insurance (let your agent know your going to get it on the specific date) and bill of sale that is dated and signed by both parties, you shouldnt have a prob drivign it back down to Miami without a tag.

To register to get your FL tag, you need to goto the DMV with your signed title (seller/buyer) and proof of insurance on the truck. They will take the title, issue you a plate on the spot, and send you a new title with your name on it in a few weeks.

Give me a call and I can give you a way to help save some money when you do the title transfer. Dont want to post it here in fear of the straight edgers who might take offense on how to save a buck and send me hate mail....

You don't have to insure the truck before you pick it up and I would highly suggest you don't unless it is 100% paid in full. You have 30 days to report any new acquired vehicles and they will carry the same limits and coverages and the highest rated vehicle on the policy covers.

This depends on the Insurance Company you have, as some don't work this way. When my son got hit driving the T/A in a parking lot by the guy driving a new car (Just pick it up 2 hours earlier) It was a real PIA to get it taken care of. All because the guy was paying more attention to the 2 girls he had with him while backing up.

Yea, the current owner should keep his plate.. it wouldnt do you any good here anyway, You will have to register it in Florida at the DMV, so theres no possible way you could have a legal tag on it for your trip home. If you want to avoid looking like you dont have a tag you may want to put your other tag on it.

I'd do the insurance thing, or atleast ask them if you are covered for some grace period when you buy a new car.

If I'm correct you will have to pay some additional fees for bringing a non-florida registered vehicle into the state (fee to generate funding based on new cars on our roads) and if you can, try to transfer an old plate to the new truck, that should save you some cash .

Don't take this the wrong way, I am an agent. Standard insurance law reads you 30 days to report any newly acquired vehicles and they will carry the highest coverage on the policy. Insurance carriers can be a pain in the ass to deal with, espically if they did have a fully covered $5k car and just bought a $30k car.

If that ever happens again, I would suggest contacting your state's dept of insurance, they don't Fu(k around.

The reason I say not to insure it until you have it in your possession, is because if the person you bought it from dropped their coverage and went out for a joy ride, wrecked it, hit someone etc... If they don't have coverage and you do, guess who's insurance gets to pay...

Veeeery interesting. Keep that one in the do-not-forget file.
