Re: Bring the Nats to Michigan

Is one of the ex-PAS employees Mr John Koss? I sure would like to meet him. I'm hoping he could verify my Ty as a 91 prototype since my VIN matches 91PROTOTY's truck.

...Don't know if this helps or not, but the Hot Rod Power Tour goes thru Michigan this year
so there might be a chance to cruise/caravan as a group one night to their Kalamazoo location.
Heres their schedule (from http://www.hotrod.com/upcomingevents/hdrp_2007_power_tour/)
2007 HOT ROD Power Tour Schedule
Saturday, June 2: Cleveland, Ohio
Sunday, June 3: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Monday, June 4: Racine, Wisconsin
Tuesday, June 5: Springfield, Illinois
Wednesday, June 6: Evansville, Indiana
Thursday, June 7: Memphis, Tennessee
Friday, June 8: Little Rock, Arkansas

...<piggybacking on my previous post>

I personally have nothing against KC, but its sorta interesting to hear other proposals as well
(especially if volunteers are willing to work at making it happen elsewhere). Since the 10th anniversary
of the nationals is special (and as correctly said, not the 10th anniversary of SyTys, or even
KC held events), "if" the following could occur, this would be great:

-more faster vehicles (like Jason`s, Gerbers, TTV8, Badnews, Martys SoGT, etc) as well
as Bully Syclone, Chitown, florida, and eastern group (Ed Hess and Tom Ferrick).
-more sponsors, and guest lecturers (if we have to move the event closer to GM, whats the harm?)
-more cruising, street action, and possible autocrossing or speedway laps at a Nascar track
-more advertising, press, and magazine coverage (if piggybacking on the hot rod power tour is possible). This might draw more faster SyTy racers (ie 2-chances to show off their rides).

...dunno, just thinking out loud again

The only question would be if the first weekend of June is too early for others....it would be good to have that (HR Power Tour) as the Finale to the event on Sunday. You could see how much Gingerman is to rent out for the autocross guys....AWD dyno at W2W...M.I.S. is right there.....we could throw eggs at the FORD offices...It'd be great fun!

Nothing wrong with thinking out loud... these threads crop up every year.

Bottom line-

Everybody wants it in their area, but when it comes to brass tacks and volunteering the many, many hours to organize such a thing, everybody seems to disappear.
(The Chitown guys did a good job when they had it, though)

We very fortunately have people crazy enough to keep doing this (organizing) in the KC area, and they have the execution down to a science. Considering the number of people involved and the fact that everybody has a different schedule, Nats operates *very* smoothly.

Move it, and you throw a lot of the hard-learned logistics out the window. Most folks really don't see the large effort it takes to put a thing like this together on a regular basis. It's really a credit to the Nats staff- you're doing your job really well when people don't notice you. :)

It's fun to talk about moving, though.
(Just not really practical)

Thank you for the Chicago Comment.

The Nats are a bear to plan and i know i spent about 40 hour a week the last two months before the Event planning it. Thank God i had great help.

I am very proud of the Event cordinators that have been doing this since 2003 and they done an incredible job.

Where ever the Event is i will be there and i will try to get as many big trucks as i can.

The Power Tour is an Awesome Event and My Goal is to Debut Syborg on the Power Tour. It's something that i am commited to with my sponsors so i have to do it no matter where and when it starts. I am just happy that it is very close to home and i won't have to worry about breaking down or where the heck am i going to park it overnight.

Re: Bring the Nats to Michigan

I think michigan would be a great place to host NATS, I have thought about it before.

We have many tourist attractions to do before/after the accual event.

Some of them include: (some of them Ken already said)
The Henry Ford Experience
Ford Field
Greektown/casinos too
A couple of Racetracks to choose from (more lienent than KC)
Many prototype trucks still reside in Michigan along with some other fast trucks
Would be closer for the Northeast, Gerber, Leach, Marty, JSM and his crew (the people that show up year after year)
Lots of cruises to go to.....
PAS employees could attend, and maybe the PPG Sy could show (resides in Michigan) we could also get GM invovled.

Tons of ideas and reasons. If Detroit idea doesn't sound good, Bowling Green Kentucky would be nice to have it there, lots to do there too, and its closer.

Just some ideas.

Re: Bring the Nats to Michigan

...Sorry guys, I`m not saying KC is bad, just thinking about the "possibilities"...
(as in "COULD THE NATS BE IMPROVED" to everyones satisfaction.

1. Of attracting more fast trucks, who probably won't show up at KC
---reasons given: Too much time off work; Too far from north/east/south/west
travel, no big purses/payouts, no big selling point for product demos, etc
It seems that people appear if it is in their own backyard more so. And
the west coast aint attracting vehicles (even tho KC is in the middle of the US).

2. Of getting more coverage (magazine, video footage, word of mouth)
---reason: To attract vendors; To keep resale value high; To attract more fast trucks
and diversity of builds/looks. Every year we keep loosing vendors
(ATR as an example).

3. Of the debates this year about KCIR (and the direction of more Tech Inspections)
---reasons: We definitely need an "understanding" agreement with the track;
No one wants "bracket racing" rules; and Laptop restrictions or lengthly tech inspections.
Granted we want safety, but is the 10-sec max ET rule gonna be standard?

4. Of attracting new agenda items like GM or Power Tour "Crashing"
---reasons; Promoting interest in SyTys (to outsiders); Facilitating a discussion
with GM/PAS (to get more info on vehicles, and develop a partnership for info flow).
I just dont see PAS past employees flying out to KC, or the budget big enough
to invite them (if they even agreed to take time off from their schedule).

5. Of attracting more "Heavy Weights" in the SyTy Community. I may be wrong on this,
but I just dont see Jason, or Marty, or Badnews, or Ed, or Tom Ferrick, or Gerber
(and some others) spending the time off/$$$$ to come to KC. Im not sure even
the Bully Syclone will return. No offense, but seeing 13 sec trucks or tow vehicles
run isnt too encouraging (or even a audience draw). Maybe the best thing this
year was the attention Robert and John brought to the table. Without a yearly
"Hoover"...some incentives for others to race/show is lost.

6. I love the SyTy community and deeply respect the work, energy, and effort
the community puts forth for KC. And I wish we could make it even more grand
(with autocrossing, guest lecturers, larger vendor attendance, sponsorship, etc).
But I also see the downsides to Canadians, CA, FL, Easterners who travel with
the knowledge that a rain out, kinda leaves everyone left to play in the hotel.
It sounds like there are "other" attractions (Plant Tours, Proving Ground Tours,
Power Tour, etc) if bad weather at other locations.

7. Okay, I like the SyTy Community. I (like a lot of others) could not attend, but have
in the past. Seeing everyone is great, so I realize its not just about racing, show
and shine, eating, or drinking. Hats off to that segment. And maybe an
intimate group of 30 - 40 well organized attendees is better off than 100
non-organized attendees. Dunno.

Im just thinking (a bad habit of mine, grin), "Whats the harm in looking at other sites?"
If everyone agreed to set aside politics - and worked together - who would care "where"
the event is held (other than those who have a personal reason, perhaps)?

If no one stepped up to do the work (at moving), then you still have KC (if a cutoff
date was set). Seems a Win-Win to me....(but again, I understand the attachment to KC).
That being comfortable, hotel relationship development, KCIR comfort, and a proven agenda.
