OK, beginning to settle in on a build. 412 cam, L35 heads (no heads purchased yet) with some porting, stock rods, some sort of forged piston (ideas welcome), full internal balance (I assume this is possible, so I can use an aftermarket flexplate.) , 50 or 60# injs with custom or code59 tune, still undecided on turbo mods. (Alky alread on the truck.)

The goal is a reliable mid to maybe low 12 truck. Not looking to be the quickest truck but a truck that is consistent. My thought is, since I had run in the 12's before, that with this build I could be there without allot of boost making the motor much more reliable.

Side question on machining the crank: Has anyone cross drilled their mains?

Everybody always dogs them, but I've yet to see TRW 2441 pulled from a motor where it was the cause of the failure. In fact, I've seen very few pulled at all.

Cheap, plentiful, reliable.

Keep your build simple, you'll be happier.

If you dont want to pay for Eagles you can get a set of W rods from your machine shop for next to nothing. Hell, you can go get some out of the jy.

Ohio Crankshaft has some nice forged rods for cheap.

Agreed. I have a set that I can't seem to tear up and I've built several engines with them and have yet to be let down.

Interestingly, on the tear down, the bearings were toast but the pistons and rings looked just fine.

I'll definitely check on the TRW's. Anyone want to chime in on cross drilling the crank?

Another Q while I'm at it. Rockers. Everyone buys pretty rollers but does anyone actually see any HP gains over and above stockers? Just wonderin' because of the cost. We don't wind our engines real tight so are things like roller rockers really necessary?

TRW pistons are very strong, but MAY cost alot more to balance ( HEAVY) need to add weight (Mallory Metal) to the crank.
Roller rockers are mainly to help valve guides to live longer with high lift cams.

Don if you are looking for a cheap set of roller rockers, you might look at the rocker arm from 2001 and up 4.3, If I understand correctly they were roller rockers from the fractory. If you can find them in the JY get everything. Stands, rockers, etc.

At leat that is what happened when we built a SBC with super light weight rods ,tappered piston pins etc.
Roller rockers are mainly to help valve guides to live longer with high lift cams.

Think you got that backwards,if your pistons & rods are too light, then you need to add heavy metal (Mallory) $100 a slug last I heard.

Aftermarket rockers are mainly used to get even & true ,say 1.5 ratio or 1.6 , stamed steel are notorious everywhere on actual lift.

No valve stem wear on tips of valves,less resistance to open & puts less side load/wear on the valve guides.

i'm doing something similar..

-custom turbotime cam
-bored .30 over
-l35 rods
-ported/polished stock heads (L35s can always be put on later, heads are easy so to speak)
-Cryo'd crank, main caps, rods
-etc..etc..etc..

Personally, I'd skip the balance and any other funky machining (cross-drill) and put the money towards the eagles. You'll get a lot more longevity out of it.

Not at the level of build that you're building, anyway. I wouldn't spend a bunch of money on that stuff.
Again, money better spent on eagles.

I would try to find a set of heads that has threaded rocker studs already... the press-in studs are kind of a weak spot.

Thanks again all. Main concern right now is the crank itself. Stopped by the shop and he's gonna get me prices on the Eagles. Once the grinder calls with the news on the crank we'll go from there.

$395 for the Eagles or thereabouts from Tucker Auto Parts. Most others were sold out (last year at least...)

Just remember investing in your bottom end is like Investing in a house. Odds are you are going to get your money worth out of it.
I did pass Smog with the 412 cam. Always got to keep that in mind.....


What is your Budget?

RPM is just down the street and extremely helpful.

SRP pistons work great for me. Forged but not a lot of piston slap.
