I think everyone that builds a engine should spend the money to make the bottom end the best it can be,and do the heads cam stuff later when budget allows,at least the motor dosent have to come back out.

Yep, you folks are convincing me on building a stout bottom end. Budget looks like this so far:

Crank 575 (If replacement is necessary, this is RPM's crank.)
Oil Pump 90
Piston Rings 113
Balancing 350
Bearings 65
Rods 359 (Machine shop can clearance the block.)
Pistons 450 (Undecided here)
Cam 225 (Still undecided here)

Line bore & hone 275
Cyl bore w/torque plate 275
4 bolt cap conversion 350
Cam bearings & plugs 65

Plug wires 45
Cap & rotor 20
Trans cooler lines 165
Converter 450 (If I change it.)

Trans (unknown if rebuild is necessary, pulling the pan tomorrow, Oil is clean and not burnt.) price TBD

Current Total 3872 (Includes RPM's replacement crank.)

None of these parts are purchased yet. Waiting on word on the crank. Notice nothing about heads, injectors, turbo, or any kind of a tune to name just a few things.

You forgot:
Main studs.
Head bolts
Whatever head work (guides, springs, valve job)
Gaskets


With good shopping and reasonable machine costs, you can build a solid basic build motor in the $1100-$1300 range. (Excluding major head work)

I went to my local machine shop and I got a quote. My machine cost were up over $2k with them asembling the shortblock(that was $750 alone). I could cut out a few items, but it would have atleast high teens for expense. Maybe its my area's high cost of living or I went ot more expensive machine shop (they come highly recommended).

That's kinda nuts. I had my block bored, decked, tanked, slight mill on the heads, crank polished for less than $400. (And they do nice work, too) I had some manifolds shaved and the intake cut as well, as well as the springs and guides checked out, and I *know* it was less than $500 for all of it.

I haven't priced it, but I think I could get an assembled long block with good parts for a hair over $2k, parts included.

As they say, "your mileage may vary".

I'll be doing my own assembly but this thing does have to live so will want good parts in the short block. Machine shop builds race motors so they're proly not on the low end of the scale but they're local and very easy to talk to about options. I'll be making a JY trip this week to scope things out there. As things move on I'll keep you posted.
