Button Ignition - Fun Question

One more problem I have with the truck. Instead of starting the truck with the key I have my truck wired so that when you press a button, while the key is turned, the car starts. For some reason a while ago I was having an issue that when I would turn the key the car wouldn't crank over it would just make a clicking sound. I talked to my dad about this and we couldn't figure it out so he said just install a button ignition, which we did. A couple weeks after we installed it he pointed out that the starter that was just recently replaced was bigger then the one we took out, he said that the original was a high magnetic starter and replacing it is most likely why my car doesn't start from the ignition. I also have a Clifford alarm system installed in my truck that may also be causing the ignition problem. My question is, what can I do?? Go buy that other starter, after I just recently replaced it, or is there a cheap and easy fix?

That starter looks huge, are you sure thats smaller? I left the one I took off at my dads house, he most likely junked it, so its no more.

Do you have any pics or diagrams on wiring the push button starter? That would be a cool option. Thanks.

Re: Button Ignition - Fun Question

the stock starter is huge and hard to get out. The 454 one is much smaller, sounds better and can be removed easy. Go to a parts store and ask for a starter for a 1996 454 3/4 ton chevy.

As well, is there any other things that may cause my car not to start up right. Is there a possibility a new starter will not even fix it? Is the starter for the 454 chevy more powerful or rather will it work better then the one I have in it now?

Re: Button Ignition - Fun Question

Oh sorry attackdog, As far as I can remember all we did was just hook a wire to my starter relay and bring it into under my dash thru the firewall (make sure to protect that wire). Then I believe we spliced into an ignition wire that was under the dash by the fuses. Connected both those wires to a button, drilled a hole and installed the button.

Re: Button Ignition - Fun Question

test the battery, clicking usually means that battery isn't giving enough CCA to bump the starter over. with all your aftermarket electronics a 140A altenator might be a worthy investment.

Re: Button Ignition - Fun Question

So if that may be the problem do you think that it may be linked to why my car dies in idle after it has been warmed? ..If so, how much does a 140A alternator run and what brand type do you recommend?
