Cam and water pump question

I have 90,000 miles on my ty. I have to change my water pump and I am going to do my timing chain while I have it apart. I want to put a cam in it and since I am right there I can just pull it out and put in a new one. Should I just wait until I rebuild the motor next summer. If it is possible to change the cam what size should I use I want a mild cam for more torque?
Is there a upgrade water pump for our truck? IF I am just crazy for wanting to change the cam let me know that tooo. THANKS BP

Putting in a cam will get a whole lot more involved than just the water pump and timing chain. You'll have to pull the radiator, get the A/C out of the way, pull the plentum, distributor and intake manifold. That's just the big stuff, that doesn't count all the things that need removed to do the above. I guess it depends on how bad you want it. Possible? Yes. Been there done that. PIA? Yes. If it were me I would wait till you rebuild the engine next summer.
If you want to tackle it, there are quite a few cam specs that you can get. It all depends on your goals.
As far as the water pump goes, there are alot of threads on which one to buy. I would do a search and see which one the most people recommend. The main thing is a higher volume on the pump.
Hope this helps.

Also don't forget that the timing cover is a bitch to remove with the oil pain still in there (which you'd have to do anyways I suppose).

Calibration prolly won't work well with most cams out there, so you may have drivability issues unless you start chipping.

Water pump - want something higher flowing & lighter, Edelbrock aluminum pump, part number 8881

race or get outta the way
new cam with old cam bearings!!!

Well if you dont mind ..... <what kinda shit does he smoke>

He probly runs high 11, no knock, and a real smooth idle. While I beat my head against the wall (gonna keep doing this till the wall is well prepped for my sy to hit it) :)

Water pump is amazingly simple. Basically unbolt the upper shroud, then the fan, then the pump. SyTyArchives.com should have the HowTo up pretty soon...

smeagol:

I have the ATR headers and my lower radiator hose and cross over are really close IF I got the edelbrock pump could I go with a "short" pump like the ones used on the vettes? would that relocate my lower radiator hose a bit. I think the short just means the input on the pump right?

I dont know how F'ed up am I on this question?

The short pump will NOT work. For one the alignment of the serpentine belt will be way off. Also, the mounts for the accessorys are different.
Easy solution, wrap the lower radiator hose in multiple layers of ThermoTec header wrap. That will keep the crossover from damaging the hose.

the other easy solution for a lower hose is to buy the SS flex hose that BG, I and many others are/were running. you can lay that thing on the crossover and not worry about it. besides it looks purrrrty
