Do I need to degree a cam? Ive installed dosens of cams before and never degree'd one. Just wondering if thats something I should do? And why I should do it?

Oh, and this motors only got about 20K on it, do I need to replace the cam bearings too? The motors still in the truck so if I dont have to replace them Im not going to....I dont want to either.

Re: Cam install....

why wouldnt you.

go thru all the time to put it in and then find something wasnt right?

once you learn how to do it it will take you all of 30 minutes to setup the dial indicator, verify tdc, and check it at .050.

otherwise its kind of like you buy a new distributor, guestimate where the rotor is pointed on the old, mark it, transfer mark to the new, installl it and since it sounds like it runs ok dont take theextra time to put a timing light on it.

or since the 1st plug out of the box had the right gap and rest of them look to be the same just put them in without VERIFYING IT.

seriously.

you put the cam in to get more performance, skip a step and you might missout on what you had hoped for.

Did someone mention degreeing a SyTy camshaft?? :D

Check out this post about SyTy cam degreeing in my Vortec head/cam install photo thread

Make sure to get that crank socket from Comp/powerhouse that I mention in that post! I wish I would have got one.

You will also notice in my post that when I degreed my cam, I found it was off by 3 degrees! I used the crank gear to put it back -4.

I don't think 3 degrees really makes a big difference, but if you're building your engine properly, don't you want to double check everything possible anyways? What if you find yours is off even more than mine was? :2cents:

Re: Cam install....

hey tooky

3 degrees can make the difference between having the torq on the bottom end vs hp on the top end.

so suppose you have more on the bottom end than you need...but want more on the top end...

wonder if the guy is going to degree the cam now? :)
