If I were to buy this Car PC, what would you recommend for a dash unit so I could still get AM/FM & play a CD? Or is that even possible?

Re: Car PC

I just got back from CES and saw this unit from Azentek. This one is pretty cool because it runs Vista and has USB inputs! Although this link shows a dual DIN, they also have a single-DIN with flip up screen that would fit our trucks.

I'm sure it would run TunerProRT and DM just fine.... I may get one as a sample and give it a try....

What is that thing used for? Looks very confusing and I am a 12volt tech.

It's a PC, a really freakin' small PC. Just add a hard drive to the bottom & away you go.
Good for running Datamaster, Tunerpro, etc. without the bulk of a laptop or having to mount it securely. Nav system, windows media, etc.

I just need to find a touchscreen interface (that also has AM/FM, CD player) that mounts where the current head unit is.

Wont that leave the mouse or keyboard open to flying all around while driving ? I thought of getting something similar but I couldnt imagine reading the small text on the 7 inch screen and drive and tune at the same time .

What do you do when you want to go inside and view the half hour of datalogging you just did ?

transfer the files to a Flash Drive and take them inside. :dunno:

I was gonna build a Car PC for the BMW originally, but the long boot up times of PC's is somewhat of a huge con when it comes to short drives to the store or just around town.

Since it's a touchscreen you would really need a mouse or keyboard. The touchscreens I've seen usually have a pop-up keyboard that activates when you need to actually type something in, like a GPS unit does.

USB drive to transfer datalog from car PC to home PC.

I've got my boot time down to 23 seconds from the time It starts up till when the music starts playing.

Thats XP home on an Athelon 2400 with a SATA drive. I did go through and disable just about every possible service other than the essentials.

EDIT: A few pics:

I guess I never took any good pics now that everything is finished. I'll have to take some and post them up.

I checked your link but didn't see a single DIN? The double is out (for me any way), so where is the single DIN unit and cost?

Thanks!

Hey James,
The single DIN flip screen is new and won't be out till April. They did have it on display at CES. They also have a nice, small wireless keyboard with built-in mouse that would make using it in a SyTy pretty easy.

Re: Car PC

Ok I'll keep a look out for it but I hope it's cheaper that the 2K plus they want for the double DIN. I can build one a lot cheaper than that for sure. Built the last one for wifey's Jag for about $500.

I'm sure it will be about the same or a little more than an aftermarket Nav unit... this one is pretty cool with what all is built into it... plus the touchscreen is good for not having to pull a keyboard out everytime you want to do something. I'll try and remember to re-post here once the single-DIN is out.

Re: Car PC

Can these things display real time gas mileage and other things like lets say trip mileage or miles left on gas in your tank??
