That sounds smart to me. For the Ty gate plug or Parent part donor, should I look for anything in particular ? Or are these Blazer/Jimmy gates as well ?
.........Vinny

the ty gate is just stock s-10 stuff, nothing special.

Ok......simple enough there ! thanks for the reply. Isn't the Ty gate a smoothie , referring to the inward draft of a SY gate ??

So we are looking at three gate skins-----stock Ty
------stock Sy,modded handle
------Modded Sy, smoothie
Until I get the donar parent gates in my hands such as a Ty gate to see the basic differences,I'll be guesing about whether or not the backsides could be fashioned the same ? This would save some time and costs.
For the gates that require load baring stiffness, i see that the Kevlar and Honeycomb Nomex matrix and additional labor would add about 225.00$ to a gates price. :squint:
I know thats harsh, I like to sit my arse there too !
Although I will say......the HCN ....is the best in light weight and ridgid structure as apposed to say a "Coremat" most commonly used . They aren't even in the same class. So you Race-gate only guys might want to consider it no matter what.
I'm planning on using Kevlar as mount point reinforcements on all gates. Perhaps aluminum plate as threaded boss's. Although there are other lighter methods, just not as robust.
I will say that no matter how you have me build these....you'd have to misshandle these regularly like a pissed UPS driver to really destroy them . The cosmetics on handling your steel gate would suffer even faster exposed to an ape !lol....( no offense to UPS drivers, really)

Speaking of shipping.......due to the light cartoned weight , they won't be hard to handle and shipping should be quite affordable by any shipper including Greyhound Express !

Ok, I got ya' there. But does anyone have a image to post of the bare inside of a Ty gate ? How much different are they designed ? Are they very close or not at all ? I'm just trying to gauge whether or not I have to build an additional mold.
I only know of 1 Ty here in my home town and we've yet to meet face to face. So maybe this is as good a time as any ??
Yo ! William Tate ??? You out there ??lol.

Re: Carbon fiber tailgate

.............Ok, I managed to buy a clean, straight non rusted undinged up rear Ty/Blazer gate today for the Ty plug.
After having this in my hands, I now see that I should be able to make ONE skin mold for the Ty and ONE skin mold for the modded Sy ..........providing no one is Hell bent for the Sy gate having the factory sucked in lines ??? I was originally going to make a sucked in version for my own Sy , but have decided to check out how it looks this Ty way !I'll still have to make two more molds for the back sides of each model due too the differences.
I need to know if I need to incorparate the stock TY lock hole for these ?? As opposed to smoothing them out ....eliminated ?
Chime in everyone thats into this and we'll get her squared away !

I would like to have the lock hole in place but it's not a deal breaker for me. I'd take it either way.

Doing the lock hole is fine with me and its not really harder with it remaining. I was unsure if you guys had some cleavor way of using a remote actuator and wanted it shaved....like your cat :rotf: ...kidding !

Next ??????

I mentioned above a actuator selinoid of some kind ?? You'd have to engineer this or have one of the members help if they too, wanted it.
But I don't know how successful you'd be to reverse this once comitted. The factory recess is as much a reinforcement to the handle twist forces as it is a method of reducing the height of the knob.
Come on guys ....lets get this one sorted. Why we're young....lol

Making electric releases is cake.. Just go to a junk yard and pick up 2 more selonoids like the one that pops the back window. After a little bracketry modification and welding they can be attached to the side latches as such:

Electric_Releases.JPG

Another option would be to put a handle inside.. That way after you pop the glass you can reach in and open the tailgate.. Either way getting the tailgate to release without and exterior handle is no problem at all...

IMO the handle on our gates looks, cheap, out of place, and it breaks up the lines...

Matt....did you just run out and snap those pix ?lol Your quick !

Remember....there won't be ANY steel to weld too, but they should get the Idea. No lock handle hole is looking better all the time.........any Naysayers ?????????  ??

Lets do this.........Email or PM me with your FINAL request of design. I'll keep a log with your full name and tally them up and post the results unaltered.
Lets say 2 weeks to deadline ( the 30th of this month 9/30 ) of all who wish to vote or get on this.My Email is ( vinceinatorz@hotmail.com )( please name as " CF TY or SY tailgate vote")

..............Cool ?????

This includes Sy's and Ty's, so chime in . Use it or loose it.

Re: Carbon fiber tailgate

I don't care if others view my preference or not, it *may* help people who are genuinely interested in this to see what direction the vote is going... This post has almost 1,000 views so you KNOW folks are interested. I vote for a smooth tailgate (no "dip") for the syclone with no provison for a handle. I would opt for it to be secured via independent latches (access from inside the bed) so that no linkage will be required to install or remove it.

FWIW, this is the look I am shooting for minus the external locking pins:

This truck is owned by Daryl H. and he won best of show at the '04 NATS.

Yes.........same visual I was seeing too !Actually the Ty and SY gates look identical once shaved fully, its the backside forms which differ completely.

So far ...from back reading the thread posters opinions.........I count. 2>stock Sy's
........3>shaved Sy's
.........4>stock Ty's
.........1> shaved Ty
........................................Thats 10 so far...............not many :(
................................At least at this point ??
So if you'd like to change this around ,let me know ? I've got the names to each style written down. I guess I could add them to the thread list for all to see ?

I vote for stock handle/latch. I have seen and had many of the stock actuators fail( I own 4 blazer types and they have all died multiple times) and I dont wanna deal with those things anymore. I'd rather have the ease of a keyed entry. besides I plan on painting mine and dont want it to look modified. the more stock appearing the better.

all that being said I will take it either way you make it bc thats just the nature of this community and if we fight about it they wont ever get made I just prefer them to be stock for my case.

J'.....your wanting stock Ty ? correct ? I had put you down for 2 stock Ty gates previously.
Very fair call on the "community"...very reasonable thinking.

well since your covering yours with paint.......arrrgh..........I could probably sell you the first ones with visual flaws at a discounted price. The visable weave needs to be darn true for the others. It certainly will have no bearing on strength or texture of the surface coat.Remind me of this later on.

X2 .

Light weight, no need for latches/handle since I'll do my own, apperance flaws ok with me since it'll get painted over anyways (sorry).
