chassis stiffening

not sure if this is the right category so correct me if i'm wrong.

i want to get rid if some of the creaks, the squeaks, and the bleeps so i thought i would tack/spot weld some areas on the frame underneath. i've done it to my s10 conversion and it did make a difference. i was just wondering before i do it if you guys didn't think to highly of it. all of it would be in the rear and not the trani. or tc crossmember area. by the way, by doing this does help with the rear hatch squeak. you just have to make sure you do it when the vehicle is level. any objections? respectfully, i8av8

Re: chassis stiffening

I think its a great idea and I plan on doing it myself. I also want to box most of the frame.

To box the frame means to close the pieces that are shaped like C. The front of your frame is boxed and the rear is not. It opens up under the front doors. Since I haven't done it yet I don't have any pictures of mine to show you.. However Jeff Scott did it to his:

Renz has told me several times that he wants to CAD up some panels so that they can be cut on the waterjet and welded into the non-boxed portions of the frame.. He just hasn't gotten around to it yet.

I boxed my AWD frame several years ago when I installed my cage and ladder bar system.

I also boxed the c-channel that was left when I removed the torque arms. I used this new flat surface to weld on a chromly drive shaft loop.

I also welded the areas where there were riviets holding the frame together. The truck rides firm but smooth. It handles great and pulls straight at the track. I do have coil overs and adjustable shocks on all corners which greatly help tune in the supension.

When I had my suspension done my fabricator and Competition Engineering Chassis recommended to do a ladder bar vs a four link in an AWD truck. A four link is prone to unload the front to easily (which is great for a 2WD setup). We need to keep as much weight on the front as possible but still transfer enough weight to hold the rear tires. We don't need to transfer all the weight to the back. I believe that the Sweden killer Sy is also set up with a ladder system. I ran some 1.4s 60 ft times in a 4,150 lb Typhoon and the front end barely lifts at all. You can see how little it lifts in the run that is in my signature. Keeping the front planted also helps in keeping it straight.

Boxing the frame has been a good thing for my Truck.

WOW!, thanx for the replies and pics. great undercarriage, windedv6. i'm sure yours handles awesome. if i noticed a difference by just a few tack welds then "boxing" the frame should really make it feel like it's on rails (with the right set-up), huh?

now i just need to find some steel plates to weld in.

Re: chassis stiffening

mattw says he'll use my ty to make some templates for boxing the frames. As soon as i have the templates in hand i'll cut a set. Should be a pretty quick kill. I won't be back to the shop for 3 weeks so this way we'll get it done much sooner...plus he has a knack for completing tasks that i fail to start.

Re: chassis stiffening

well it's one of my cladding sets being used. If it was his own set, and he wanted to sell it...he'd been done with it long ago.
