Chirping Noise

Heres my story:
A little while ago, my turbo ingested plastic from the air tube and the inlet blades got messed up. I then started to hear 'chirping' from under the hood. I purchased a used stock turbo and drove the Ty as little as possible. Now, I put the newer turbo on, blades are fine and the chirping is still there. From the beginning it progressively got worse and sounds like where I left off. It happens while driving under load and no boost, thats why 'ass'umed it was the turbo. It won't chirp when revving in neutral. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
I am going to check the fluid in the front diff tomorrow morning. Is the diff even a possibility?

TIA!!!

The surpentine belt can make funky noises. You can eliminate it or one of the devices it turns by temporarily running the ride without it.... Just for a sec.

It could be one of your idler pulleys. The bearings they rotate on are replacable. I forget the number but they do press out and in.
Just be sure when you install the new one you push on the outer race.

Alright guys, I took the belt off and the noise is still there. I don't even know where to look.

I searched SyTy.org archives and found a few posts stating that a new Brake Booster Valve may cure a chirping sound. Sound good to anyone?

Thanks.

I dunno the brake booster check valve on mine was more like an electric servo whining noise.. Others say it's a honking. But for me it was only at slow speeds pressing the brakes or releaseing them and pressing the gas slightly.

I ran it without the belt and still had it, so the alternator isn't making the noise. Any other suggestions?

I pulled the propshaft today and one of the joints are beat! It has some play in it. I took it for a spin without the shaft and no more noise. Do you guys think it is the propshaft making the noise? Or could it be the front diff?
Thanks.

Ron,

My Ty had this Chirp a couple of years ago also and it was my front prop shaft. I took it to this guy I know who has a 4x4 shop cause I didn't feel like crawling under it being it was winter. He removed the prop shaft and lubed. Problem solved for over a couple of years now.
I think alot of sy/ty owner including myself neglect to Lube the prop shaft and one of the reasons is probably because you need a special needle point for the end of the grease gun to lube I believe is the cardon joint. Not lubeing the prop shaft I would suspect is one of the contributing reasons for prop shaft failure along with a torn boot.
Check under the Archives section for more info on this.

Thanks Rick,
I am going to take it to a drive shaft place not too far from me. Hopefully he can do something with it, otherwise I think I may look into Brandons Propshaft.

Rick I find this very interesting because I also believed the factory stock propshaft needs a needle point and can be lubricated but other SyTy owners have told me that no, it can't be lubricated and only aftermarket ones need lubrication. How can I be sure which is the truth? I have the factory stock DYNOTECH propshaft and if it needs lubrication then I will have it done. Thanks.

I can't say for sure that my propshaft is an orignal piece but it would seem that way.

Mine is lubeable, if that's a word. I take it out every oil change and put a little grease in the rear joint. It does require a needle adapter for the grease gun to do. Thats prolly way often than a person needs to do it, but hey what that hell.

yo tony, all the sy/ty's have a spot to lube the cv joint. this is why mine went out. weirdest noise i have ever heard. check with a local driveline shop as it should only run about $250.00. i copied brandons and left the cv joint out.

When the Ty propshaft was going it would come up with the oddest noises, so yes I can believe your shaft is the cause.
I swore my power steering was gone since it would squeak on real slow right hand turns...

I would give dynotech a shot at repairing and rebalancing your shaft. Not too expensive and you can be assured that they at least have a good chance at getting it right the first time.

Good luck,

As far as lubing goes, both my stock shafts could be lubed, if you pulled the front down and lubed thru the center hole. This introduced lube into the boot area.

Re: Chirping Noise

Same exact problem here, but I am just sorting out what the solution should be. Your problem sounds extremely similar to mine: Without boost, not in neutral, and it almost sounds like it's coming from the shifter inside the cab.

I am just making sure before I buy a new propshaft. How horrible is it really if sytys are driven without the propshaft for a few weeks? Serious nono, or would it probably be just fine? I would imagine it would be alright.

Re: Chirping Noise

well some say driving w/o is bad some say it's not bad. i've had to do it since december when my front shaft let go and so far it's not be a problem other than traction and it likes to roll down hills while in park.
