Chromoly Dustan suspension parts

I am having 2 upper ball joint adaptors made for someone out of chromoly.

To the best of my knowledge, via hardness testing, etc. The ones Al supplied are mild steel. I am going to have these replacements made from 4130 Chrome moly. If anybody wants to replace theirs, I can have some extras made at same time. Quantity will bring down the cost.

I can have lowers made also, if somebody needs them.

If nobody does, not a big deal, just offering while I have these 2 made up.

How long did it take to wear out or down , how many miles are we talking here?
So we did not get what we paid for out of this kit?
Has anybody else had to replace these parts prematurelly, Dam , this sucks, i have not even used the truck since i put the kit on and i need to replace some parts for lack of integriety?

Part of why I took my setup apart was the previous idiot had it installed by a moron.
It did not "wear out" per say, but when it came apart the adapters were ruined. Why, you ask?
The steel nylok nut was fused on and it took the threads OFF the adapter that was supposed to be grade 10 aircraft steel,
as I was told on the phone.

Now I don't know what they make nylok nuts out of but its not grade 8 and surely
it should not be harder than the material holding up the weight of the front end.

I am 100% willing to donate the parts I removed for hardness testing,
mainly because I am curious as to how hard they really are.

Either way I want them out of Chromoloy so next time I take it apart its not on jackstands
for 5 weeks waiting while i get told day after day it already shipped.
I am NOT doin that shit again.

I finally got my stops and my spanner wrenches form Dustan.
I paid for all my stuff in check at the Nats in Chitown and just got my spanners on Monday... That's a little over 6 months for less than $200 worth of parts.
Anyhow Here's what they are supposed to look like, I guess.

Not all that impressive but if it will stop my scrubbing I'm using them.

I got the first quote today for parts.

Getting it quoted for machining one, it is $74 each.

I am having him requote for 4 pieces, for Jas and the other. If anybody else wants, I will need to know ASAP. I need to the 1 set done NOW. Price will be LESS than $74 each. Please let me know if you want a set.

That is only for upper, as 1 was lost, so we decided to replace with 4130 chromemoly.

I did do a hardness test on them, and it BARELY was on the Rockwell C scale. In laymans terms, it is soft as a MILD steel would be.

I would be glad to do another hardess test and get the actual # if somebody is really interested.

I would hate to see this piece break on somebody, while driving down the road. Things could get ugly quick, and I DO NOT MESS with safety issues.

Hardness is only one property of metal. It doesn't tell the whole story.

It would be far better to know what the adapter is made of. As long as you're going to the trouble, have it run across a nuclear analyzer and get the elemental composition. Then you can estimate tensile and yield strengths, which are far more telling than a simple hardness test.

You'll also have a good idea what it is, and then you can prove if Al was wrong in what he told you.

BTW, what exactly did Al tell you the adapters were made of...?

I know it was soft as baby shit if a nylok nut can take the threads off of it.

What I think is that “Grade 10 aircraft steel” doesn’t mean squat unless you can find a universally accepted material spec for it. I’m sure the aerospace industry has its own accepted material specs, but in general, the term “Aircraft grade” is just a buzzterm that’s overused. People hear “Aircraft Grade” and think whatever it refers to must be super strong or super good…”I mean, if they use it on planes, it must be better…right?” Not necessarily. That may be an actual spec, and perhaps “grade 10 aircraft steel” is the same as SAE J429-Grade 2 (a common bolt). Then again, if he made it up, it can mean anything he wants it to, can’t it?

The thing is, none of this really addresses the crux of the issue, which is this: is that adapter strong enough to do the job or not? Al says that he has done the calcs, and claims it is. Until someone finds out exactly what that adapter is made of (properties) and does the calcs to prove him wrong, it’s all speculation. The only other proof will come if someone running Al’s suspension shows up with a busted front end. There are more than a couple kits in use, however, and so far, that hasn’t happened.

Send me your adapter Jas, and I’ll take it out in our shop and have it analyzed for you. Then you’ll know exactly what it’s made of. Find an engineer willing to do a stress analysis, and then you’ll have proper proof for a debate.

Until then, it’s all opinion. :wink:

My opinion is that I am getting chromoly adapters for my trucks safety and my peace of mind.
Having seen my adapters when I took them apart I have my opinions of what its made of, "aircraft grade" or not. I'm no metalurgist so he could have told me it was titanium grade if he wanted to make shit up. :lol:
He told me all about the overdesigning and stress testing he had done during his build, the rest of the setup still has my confidence.

I understand everything your saying here, and I am not out to discredit anyone.
I just want to know what's here in my hand and be able to relax while taking corners at high speeds.
Everyone else should be entitled to the same things.
