Re: cladding repair How to

it is pretty basic.. you either use a plastic welder or epoxy.. the rest is common sense and time.

Did not mean to offend anyone with the common sense comment, I just don't get how it is confusing.

Plastic welder:
-heat up welder
-warm up area that needs to be fixed
-melt new "universal" material into the area that needs to be fixed
-sand and make look pretty

fixing tabs:
-grind away (use dremel) a groove for the tab to sit in
-melt area around
-melt replacement tab so it is pliable
-reinforce the tab, extra plastic all around it.

Epoxy:
-mix epoxy
-apply liberally
-sand and make look pretty

not a whole lot to it, and i've repaired a shitload of pieces. Of course everyone has their own methods and secrets :D

Re: cladding repair How to

Maybe I'm crazy, I've always used a few layers of lightweight fiberglass to do the job :2cents:

I've seen this done too.. getting it to stick to the plastic can be a pain..

I hate pieces that people have used fiberglass on, as it is a pain in the ass to get rid of completely.

Re: cladding repair How to

I'm sorta interested in this, as upon removing my front arches, I found that the clown that painted it the last time wrecked 2 tabs (and didn't bother to put them back), and some of the mounting holes are gorked.

Where would I find the right type of plastic to recreate some tabs?

Suggestions on types/brands of adhesive (I don't have a plastic weld setup) would be appreciated as well.

Thanks,

Re: cladding repair How to

i bought a product called permapoxy plastic weld , which was in a purple package at advanced auto parts. its been holding strong and strdy, but make sure that you paint over the epoxy or the road grime( snow salt) will soften and weaken it .but the epoxy was less than 15 dollars and worked great

I would like one. I'm also an idiot with no common sense. Plus I'm always up for learning others ways to do things. Who knows, they are probably better then my ways. Always willing to learn. Thanks for the class teach.

I'm pretty sure you can't use a welder on our cladding. I had to replace my right front arch recently and repaired the original. I couldn't believe how much filler there is in our cladding!! Usually filler will make a plastic part quite a bit stronger, but the amount of filler used in our parts is way higher than normal, and is probably for resistance to road chemicals. There is so much filler that I'm not sure a welder would work.

So that actually works to weld our cladding, Ken?? Wow, that would really be surprising... there is just so darn much filler in that cladding, and I would think the filler would cause a weak weld.
I used an aviation-grade epoxy on the one I fixed, along with some carbon-fiber cloth for reinforcement... worked really well, but I had to be careful and make sure the surface was roughed up to the right texture.
