Code 43 and truck shutting off

As soon as I start the truck the check engine light comes on and a code 43 is set. The truck will run for a few minutes then just shuts off. It starts right back up and will die a few minutes later.

I have already replaced the ignition module, ecu, memcal, and knock sensor.

Any ideas? Or procedures I can use to track down the problem.

Thanks,
Brian

You may have already seen this...just posting for reference...

Also, some more info here with diagrams: http://syty.org/old/d&e-code43.html

CODE 43

ELECTRONIC SPARK CONTROL (ESC) CIRCUIT

Circuit Description:

The knock sensor is used to detect engine detonation and the ECM will retard the electronic spark timing based on the signal being received. The circuitry within the knock sensor causes the ECM 5 volts to be pulled down so that under a no knock condition, CKT 496 would measure about 2.5 volts.
The knock sensor produces an A/C signal which rides on the 2.5 volts, DC voltage. The amplitude and signal frequency is dependent upon the knock level.
If CKT 496 becomes open or shorted to ground the voltage will either go above 3.5 volts or below 1.5 volts. If either of these conditions are met for about 5 seconds, a Code 43 will be stored.

Test Description:

1. Code 43 will set when:
* Coolant temperature is over 90°C
* MAT temperature is over 0°C
* High engine load based on MAP and rpm
* Voltage on CKT 496 goes above 3.5 volts or below 1.5 volts
* All conditions present for 5 seconds

If an audible knock is heard from the engine, repair the internal engine problem, as normally no knock should be detected at idle.

2. If tapping on the engine lift hook does not produce a knock signal, try tapping engine closer to sensor before proceeding.
3. The ECM has a 5 volts pull-up resistor, which should be present at the knock sensor terminal.
4. This test determines if the knock sensor is faulty or if the ESC portion of the Mem-Cal is faulty.

Diagnostic Aids:

Check CKT 496 for a potential open or short to ground. Also check for proper installation of Mem-Cal.
Refer to "Intermittents" in Section "B".

Thanks for the info!! I did not find all of that. Do you have any pics of the ecu pinouts? I don't know where CKT 496 is....

Without the knock sensor connected I get 4.92 volts at the knock sensor plug. It doesn't look like it is shorting to ground.

CKT 496 - dark blue wire to knock sensor.

I don't see that wire at the ECU....am I supposed to test it at the ECU or?

You can check it at the knock sensor.

With the sensor plugged in? Sorry, electrical testing is not my specialty.

BTW thanks for the quick replies :)

Re: Code 43 and truck shutting off

I tried unplugging the knock sensor and the truck still dies. I also unplugged the tan wire under the dash and the car still dies. I have fuel pressure the whole time. I hooked up datamaster and all the parameters look to be in order except for this damn code 43. Would this code cause the truck to die? Any other ideas? I would really like to drive my truck again, but it will not cooperate with me :(

Re: Code 43 and truck shutting off

Long shot here but im guessing you've already pulled the ecm b fuse for a little while to allow the truck to clear the stored code and relearn all the parameters?

Yep, many many times. :)

Yep, brand new knock sensor torqued to factory spec.

did it threw the same code with the old knocksensor? and did it start all of the sudden?

Yep, that is why I replaced it to begin with. I have checked all of the conditions that would cause the code 43(ty0279 posted above), but none of them are occurring. This has got me stumped.

if the chip isn't prolly seated it will throw the same code, replaced the chip?

Re: Code 43 and truck shutting off

maybe the pin got loose inside the connector that hooks up to the ECM?
have you measured up te risisctance between ECM and the connector for the KS?

Re: Code 43 and truck shutting off

Well I got tired of messing with it and took it to a friends shop. It look him a while, but he found some wires behind the dash that were chewed up causing intermittent problems :-( . As soon as he told me that I remembered having a mouse in the garage a while back (who was later poisoned to death...I watched him twitch and die) lol

On to the point of the story, can I still buy the harness? Anybody got a part number and/or price estimate? I am guessing that would be the better option instead of trying to patch up the wires.

Thanks for your time

I bet that took forever to find.
