crank strength

I am going to do an engine build over the winter. I am curious with peoples experiences and opinions. I am planning on building a pretty stout engine with a fairly large turbo. Will the stock crank hold, should I use a nitriated crank, or should I just go crazy and use a billet crank. I am curious about horsepower strengths on each crank.

Re: crank strength

Stock crank cryo'd and nitrided will hold decent power . Going bowtie block or stock 4.3 ? What heads etc ??

Re: crank strength

Well in my stock 163,xxx mile engine, it had a slight rod knock ona couple cylinders i believe, nothing real bad, didnt make any noise except for start up and up around 3500+ RPM, well i drove it like this from dec to july, when it got real noisy and i just shut it off, well i got the engine pulled yesterday and found that the crank is now is 2 pieces.

I think the stock crank can hold up to some decent power numbers, but id say of your planning on going over 600, than i woulod pony the dough for a billet crank and not worry about it again.

Re: crank strength

using stock 4.3, vortec heads, not sure what turbo(fairly large), forged rods and pistons, want to build fast typhoon that will kill but still have somewhat streetability.
