Re: Daily Driver Typhoon

Why do you wanna get rid of it? you just bought it? Either way I've definently been very interested in coming down to look at it, I was as a matter of fact gonna call you to ask you a few questions until you took it down, I thought it was gone at that point but I'm glad it's not quite yet. I will come down as soon as my 92 S10 sells (soon, I hope, I've lowered the price to like $700) just so I could sell it and come check out ur Ty. I have the money right now, it's now just about getting my S10 out of my neighbor's driveway, and getting one of my friends to drive me down on a Saturday that I ditch out from work. LOL

Re: Daily Driver Typhoon

Im selling it because after owning it, I have realized that I would rather have the money to do other things with it. I like the Typhoon, but honestly I think this way, I'd would rather build something else like it, but better. Thats just me, I had a blazer, was kinda cloning a Ty, then after trying to decide how to build a turbo motor for it, I just decided to buy a ty, now that I have it, its not that big a deal to me. These guys are right though. It can cost alot on repairs, which is normal for any vehicle no matter what, to me the difference is the intial cost of SY/TY's. I can do alot with $7500 bucks! By the way I had a guy from Seattle call yesterday at first I thought it was you, but not, he is supposed to look at this Sunday, we'll see though.

Re: Daily Driver Typhoon

Crap, I wanna come down not this Sat. but next. I just sold my S10 today:) I would come down this Sat., but too many people already requested this Saturday off. I talked to two of my friends and they said that they would definently give me a ride down there, were making it our senior rode trip. lol. But hopefully it's still there, but for what it is I probably won't hold my breath on it, I'm surprised it hasn't sold yet. Have you had a lot of these "I'll come look at it" but they never come? Cause I've definently had quite a few of those on my s10 until now. But if for some reason he doesn't buy it or is a no show, I'm letting you know I'm very interested and willing to make the 200 mile trip to come see it!!!

X2 This truck does wonders in the snow!

We had a serious couple of snowstorms here in NJ this year... 85% of the vehicles on the road were getting stuck or weren't able to be controlled too well... I remember driving around all the stuck people as if I were on dry pavement. lol even the hummers and wranglers were stuck...

Also, not reccomended, but I drove the truck down a road that was one entire solid sheet of ice that was 1"-2" thick...I was the only one out of 7 vehicles to be able to move.

These trucks definately go places... but to be honest, I think from now on, I won't be driving it in bad weather like that anymore... The truck is really low to the ground, and I don't want to risk destroying my drivetrain...just like the sticker on the sun visor says...

Re: Daily Driver Typhoon

Ask me how I know...... I drove mine this winter, since it "never really snows" in the Seattle area, from what I was told. Well, was running low on gas, followed some tracks in the snow to a gas station. Ended up snagging the tranny x-member on a curb. Pushed the tranny up into the body and really bent up that x-member. If at all possible, abuse something else in the winter. Winter driving is not the time to find out what parts are specific to these trucks. :(

Oh ok thanks for the input guys, cause it snows like hell up here, and I guess i'll be callin into work quite a bit, cause screw risking to destroy one of these things in a 20 mile drive to work for an 8 hour day when I can sit on my ass and eat popcorn all day. lol

Re: Daily Driver Typhoon

I had a wife call me twice from NY and really seemed interested, said they were waiting for their tax refund. Haven't heard from them, they said a few weeks but its been three weeks. So, have faith, if you really want it, it'll come to ya! No matter what it is, if I want it bad enough, I someone end up with it. There, thats my advice for you as a graduating senior.. Did you see the ad? Call me anytime. Heres a few pictures of my 4x4 blazer I built and sold to help pay for the Ty

Re: Daily Driver Typhoon

I love syty's been around them for 11 years now...yikes.... but I think your making a mistake on buying this as your only car, daily driver and a young persons budget.

But if you do go forward with it, I hope you already have a tool box and some energy.

BTW my buddy and roommate from college lives near you. I know that area of country well.

Re: Daily Driver Typhoon

I keep about $1000 a month after bills tho, and I have some time to work on it, I'm not worried about the money, it's just time. But I mean whats the difference between driving an 05 STI or something with the turbo AWD and drivin a Typhoon. My buddy has put 60k miles on his STI in 2 years and had almost no problems. Same with my friend and his VW GTI, and he redlines it 24/7. Just wondering what the difference would be between the two?

Re: Daily Driver Typhoon

Not trying to steer you away, the syty group needs as many good enthusiastic owners as we can get.

Difference between the STI you mentioned and syty is.

STI is made in the 10's of thousands, lots of years of AWD development, rally racing, etc.

The syty was from what I have heard a guy and some buddies pet project that GM approved on a limited basis to help with the GMC brand. It was a rush project that probably only barely ever made it to production on several occasions. A few months development at most and rush to get them out the door.

They were expensive, really didn't fit the type of vehicle most customers that walked into a GMC dealer were looking to buy (A true TRUCK). The didn't sell well in part due to this. SUV craze hadn't hit yet either, be cool to think the syty's started it though.

So basically they are orphan kids that mom and dad didn't really want to have or support. (nothing against a true orphan child).

So with that said they have some weak links, trans being 1, the tune of the motor is critical, detonation is easy to find, hard to get rid of and can hurt things quickly. They don't idle like a sewing machine. Parts are not always easy to find.

So you probably think I hate these trucks. Far from it. They are one if not my favorite vehicle. This is because its rare (don't find many others around), they are fast (or can be, put a twin turbo v8 in them and they go even faster), AWD is just cool on the street, and probably the #1 reason is the guys that are on the board are fun and I consider them my friends that we just happen to share owning the same vehicle.

So the truck buys you admission into a club you couldn't get anywhere else.

Now if I was 18 (I bought my truck in my early 20's) I am not sure it would be the best driver. Not to say all 18 yr olds couldn't be excellent owners.

I guess I am just warning you to be prepared to put in some elbow grease (remember the small production #'s, nobody knows how to work on them, so you really must do it yourself and you mention lack of time).

The best suggestion is to buy a backup vehicle. Park it somewhere just so you have it. Even a $500 car would be worth having around.

2nd thing is do a lot of research before you buy and for sure before you make sure the throttle pedal has full travel.

Re: Daily Driver Typhoon

Another good thing about owning a SyTy, is that we are such a small group or family, just about everyone is will to lend a hand to you when in need. If its parts knowledge or even wrench time......people here bend over backwards for each other. Try to get that type of help with a Chrysler LeBaron.....not gunna happen.

Re: Daily Driver Typhoon

A while ago someone on here was comparing sti to syty, he said something like-in a year a syty will need a couple grand in parts plus labor, the sti will need gas.
Of course in todays market you could buy 2 ty's for the price of the Sti and have one for a back-up parts runner... wait hows that gonna work.

Re: Daily Driver Typhoon

Yeah, no shit, This site is awesome, and so far everyone here has been nothing but the friendliest of people. If I was to ever need any help, this would definently be the first place I go, F the dealership, they're dumb money hungry basterds. But again, I can't say enough how much I appreciate all the imput from everybody, this just makes me feel more and more comfortable about gettin a SyTy.
