Re: DashPC in Syclone 1596

Another thing, if you desire to run the cameras, you'll need an alt. power source at the camera (esp. if using PTZ cams). The integrated backup cam would be self-powered, but a shielded, twisted pair would be almost necessary to cover that length to the back. I was also working on integrating a 4G/WiFi antenna in place of the factory ext. antenna to use for connectivity. I'll finish this on my own truck, but it's kind of overkill considering the int. antennas will probably suffice.

Re: DashPC in Syclone 1596

ever think of using an intel nuc for the machine?

Not initially. The NUC wasn't released until after I had already designed this (I started this project back in 2005 as a much more rudimentary design and redesigned it to this setup in 2007). Once they released the SB models, I was anxious to see the board layout and NBCS capabilities. I think I got my hands on an early Q3 Ivy model (might have been a prerelease Haswell) and while I was impressed with it, I was disappointed at the lack of embedded NBCS output options. None of the LCDs that I wanted to use (for their size and thickness) accepted mDP or 1.4a.....nor did I care for them to as the LCD needed no audio abilities. I've run into this problem with other embedded and SFF options.....they're meant for universal appeal and compatibility. My dashPC isn't.

I know this is an old post but...

What resolution do you run on this Mike?
I ran across this monitor and was thinking that 1280x800 would be perfect!

Just getting tired of the laptop in the truck... and i wish that it was more than 350 nits but...

Re: DashPC in Syclone 1596

1366x768. Was running 1024x600 while tuning to help with gauge clarity while driving but leave it higher now. My NBCS and LCD support higher, but I don't need it. I do like the screen you linked (HDMI4pi) because of the physical mounting tabs and the PCB compatibility, but I DO NOT like the need for an external PSU or the required PCB for video conversion. This would give you input flexibility but it would be cumbersome and the extra power requirement would be a turnoff for MY application.

I do like your idea of running lower resolution for tuning.

It looked like there was a wide range of voltages that the screen would work under, and could easily power it off the orange wire that is already there! I also thought that the multiple inputs could be very valuable and useful even though they are on a separate PCB...

We have quite a few NUK 's here at work but they require 19.5v and therefore a converter...

Re: DashPC in Syclone 1596

I tried powering some stuff with the 12V supply already there and didn't like the consistency of it. I chose to run a full system PSU (mobo/dev/lcd/etc...) with a battery override. System defaults to battery supply with 12V "topoff" and supply rollover when PJS detected. This enables me to power the system with no truck power input as well as keep the system alive with cranking. This is the same mentality that most OEMs take, so it's a well beaten path.

I still dislike the idea of the LCD requiring separate power if the input expansion of this unit unneeded. The PCB is more than capable of supplying the needed voltage for the display (including backlighting and webcam/mic power). It'd be like a laptop that needs two chargers....one for the LCD and one for everything else.
