decent source for aldl cables

Found this while looking up stuff for my corvette.. looks to have tons of info and offer some cables for decent prices so I figured i'd post it up for all to check out.

I made mine for less than $30. I sell one for $60 shipped. PPITyphoon sells one too but is much cheaper. I think he still sells it anyway. But personally, the USB one you found in that link looks pretty nice and for $60 Ild say thats not bad. Ild probably get that one.

Actually, you're going to be the new source for these it looks like. I've suspended my production of the cables. My initial goal was to inform people that they can be had for much cheaper than the $100+ they were going for originally. Now a couple years later, there are multiple sources for cables under $70 now.

WIth that in mind, I'm going to be focusing on my cladding reproduction project. It takes up much more of my time, so the ALDL cables aren't getting my attention at the moment.

I do appreciate all the people who have purchased them. I've shipped over 200 cables, some of which have made it all the way across the world. I am thrilled about that, but I think it's time that I move on to my next project.

I wouldnt mind taking over at all. But unfortunately, I just cant match that price for the time and cost it takes me to make them. Ill do them for $50 + shipping. Sorry if I cant do better but for the amount of time and price of materials, it just doesnt make sense to do it less.

I was wondering if anyone had found a way to make these cables without an external power supply and is willing to share the schematics/parts list with me.
I had been reading this thread: http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=21406 but since I'm a novice in circuits, I was not able to understand how they were able to power it properly. (Also, anyone know where to get the 12 Pin connector from?)

That circuit is different than the one that I built and the one I made does not require an outside source either. Being a novice in buliding circuits, I'd recommend you just pick one up from TYTILIDIE, or possible ERUE at http://www.turbotime.us. He received the last batch of cables I made. Either source, you're probably going to be around $60 for the cable.

But in answer to your question, both the one you cited, mine and TYTILIDIE's cables are powered from unused pins on the serial port. Run those through a 5-volt regulator, and that usually is enough to power the needed circuitry.

What 12 pin connector are you talking about? The serial cable is either a 9 pin or 25 pin depending on the configuration.

Are you planning on making and selling these cables too?

Thank you for the quick reply.

When I say novice in circuitry, I mean: I know how most parts work: resistors, transistors, diodes, and I know their purpose in a stand alone sense. I just can't pick up a circuit and know what it does in that specific situation. I am fairly adept when it comes soldering because I use it for other applications as well. So I don't think that will be a problem.

I don't plan on mass producing these, as I don't have all that much free time, but if other members here are looking for them I could build a few. More importantly I love DIY, I would rather spend the same ammount of money to make it myself than buy it pre-made.

Finally, the 12 pin connector is the part that actually connects to the car.
